The history of garlic

type=textHistorians claim that garlic has been around for at least 6000 years. It is believed to have its roots in Central Asia. But many ancient civilizations, including the Romans, Greeks as well as Egyptians, used garlic to boost strength and prevent diseases. It was said garlic made Egyptian builders stronger and Roman legions more courageous. It was even worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, and garlic images made of clay were found in Tutankhamon's grave!
In other countries garlic was believed to be a lucky charm used to ward off evil. Some Christians even believe that when Satan left the garden of Eden, garlic sprung up in his left foot-print. (and onion in the right!)

Roasted garlic

Peel off the outer layers of the garlic, but keep them together as a bulb with the inner peel. Chop off the top, about 1/2 inch, and put them on a pan or in muffin forms. Drizzle olive oil over the garlic. Cover with aluminium foil.
Roast in a preheated oven (400F) for about 35 minutes. The bulbs should be soft when touched. Allow to cool, then squeeze out the garlic and eat with bread or as a side-dish to roast! Also delicious mashed with pasta and some vegetables!

The Lily family

Garlic is called Allium Sativum in latin, and is closely related to onion, chive, leek, rakkyo and shallot, of the lily family. It is commonly agreed that it originates from Central Asia. The word 'garlic' comes from Old English, meaning 'spear leek'. Some common names used for it is 'stinking rose' and 'Italian perfume'. Although previously looked down upon, it now has a solid place in the best cuisines in the world!

Garlic is good for you!

Garlic is a very tasty little bulb. But it also has a lot of qualities that are good for you. When garlic is cut, there is a chemical reaction which turns the inherent alliin into allicin, a sulpur-containing molecule. This is anti-fungal.
Garlic is also anti-septic, and was widely used during World War 1 by the Russian army to treat wounded soldiers. In fact, it was called the Russian penicillin.

Garlic cures

type=textThere are probably as many garlic-cure-recipes as there are sick people in the world, most likely you know of some. Many claim that garlic should be eaten raw to have any effect, others are convinced that boiled garlic is equally good. This is a recipe for cold that has been recommended by many of my friends, from different part of the earth, in basically the same way. It works for me!

In a mug mix:
4 cloves of finely chopped or pressed garlic
1 tsp honey
1 tbsp lemonjuice
1/4 cup of rum
Pour hot water over, and slowly sip it. Then go to bed!

I would like to love it but this relationship will take a little more time. The first 53 years have been stormy. Maybe garlic and I will do better in the latter halp of my century.

spunkyduckling says:

Can't stand anything that burns on my tongue and smells. But I know it has so many good healing benefits. So I love the work it does not the garlic itself. Smile.

Yes, garlic has many health benefits. Buying it fresh CAN be a challenge here in Canada, but I finally found a really fresh grocer nearby. (Oops, the grocer isn't fresh, thank god, but the garlic is - ha).
