The power and health benefits of garlic in your diet
Many nutritional experts believe anecdotally that garlic is an amazingly healthy food and now, several research studies have shown this to be true. In fact, the very same components in garlic that make it have such a strong smell and flavor appear to have the ability to be protective against certain types of cancer. Garlic can do so by reducing the ability of cancer cells to grow and by blocking the power of cancer-causing chemicals.
Garlic throughout History
Among alternative medical healers, garlic has been felt to have amazing health properties for a number of years. Garlic has been part of the healing process in diseases as diverse as respiratory illnesses and the plague. Even though garlic is hardly a miracle medication, it does seem to have some ability to heal. In fact, most healers believe that the stronger the smell and flavor of the clove, the better are its healing powers. Healers believe that this is because the same thing that causes the intense odor is what gives the garlic clove its healing abilities.
There are those who believe that organically grown garlic has a more potent sulfur content and therefore is healthier for you. There are others who take garlic in supplement form in order to achieve the maximal healing ability of the garlic without the nasty garlic on your breath.
How we see garlic today
We've eaten garlic for its taste and for health reasons for many years. Now recent research studies are suggesting that there are potent antibiotic properties inside the garlic clove. It has also been found to be an excellent mosquito repellant.
Eating raw garlic is fairly healthy for you but it is also very pungent. This means that eating too much garlic at once can lead to mouth and stomach irritation or problems with digestion and damage to the intestinal tract. Some of us are allergic to garlic as well. Those who are allergic to garlic can develop a fever, skin rash and headache. For those who can take garlic, it acts as a potent blood thinner. Experts say that you shouldn't eat garlic before having surgery. If you're taking garlic in sufficient amounts, you should tell your healthcare provider about any garlic or garlic supplement you may be taking.

Whenever you purchase garlic, it is important to buy the cloves that smell the strongest and appear to be the freshest. The stronger the odor, the more sulfur compounds could be found in the clove. This makes those cloves the highest in health benefits.
You can use garlic in a number of ways, including eating raw in salads or putting it in your cooked recipes. Try to make sure you combine garlic with other healthy foods so you can maximize the healthiness of your entire diet.
If you're interested in using fresh garlic as a part of your healthy cooking, there are several types of prepared garlic products, including garlic powder and garlic salt. You can use these products along with fresh garlic but remember that they aren't the greatest replacements for fresh garlic. Still, if you buy these products, look for high quality brand names that are pungent and contain high amounts of sulfur.

- I suffer from bad period cramps. I have been taking raw garlic (2 cloves cut up with water every morning) for about two months now and believe me no more cramps, period.

- I often chop up garlic and throw it into a bottle of water. Drinking this water makes me feel like I'm eating something quite exquisite without actually eating. I do this when I am doing any kind of diet, or just too poor to eat real food. Even when I'm eating regularly, drinking it just tastes good
