Garmin 285W Nuvi GPS

The sleek widescreen Garmin 285W nuvi GPS navigator takes you there with preloaded maps and turn-by-turn directions that call out streets by name. It delivers real-time local weather, traffic, movie times, stock information, gas prices, news and local events as you navigate. The 285WT provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). Like the rest of the nüvi 205-series, this portable navigator is priced right and ultra-easy to use.  The model number on the box is 285WT because the traffic receiver is included; however, the model number on the device itself is 285W as the "T" in 285WT refers to the additional component

Garmin 285W nuvi GPS Features:

  • 4.3-inch widescreen touch display lets you view map detail, driving directions, photos, and more in bright, brilliant color
  • Preloaded with detailed 2D and 3D City Navigator NT street maps, with over 6 million points of interest
  • Voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions with spoken street names and HotFix satellite prediction

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied First Time GPS User, August 4, 2010 By 1Sunbum (Newport, RI) This review is from: Garmin 285W/285WT nuvi 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic (Electronics)

Bought 2 of these when they were $120, one for myself and one for a friend. Easy to get up and running, tho it takes some thought since there's minimal info in the printed instructions. Initial impressions were that it was a well designed quality device, nicely made and finished. The 6ft. power cord is almost too long; the included 1ft. USB cable is too short.

After using it for a few weeks, I'm very satisfied. Some things I liked: The voice prompted directions (a necessity in the car, I think); the screen size is more than adequate and I like the way it adjusts itself (colors/contrast) to daylight or night; the mounting system worked better than I expected and is effective; it's portable with the built in battery; the free one-time map update; the image viewer function and ability to take an SD card, etc. It's got a bunch of built in utilities. Wasn't impressed with the MSN Direct service. Connecting it to the computer was problem free; no issues running the Garmin software with Vista. I liked the ability to download different vehicle icons, updates, etc.

The first few times I used it was for 100-250 mile drives where I had it on but was taking my known routes. I sometimes wondered where it was having me go, but it kept quickly recalculating directions. The first time I used it with a new destination, I had it on but was following written directions, and after missing a turn, decided to follow the Garmin directions, which turned out to be more direct; I went from thinking I'd barely make my appointment on time to arriving early. The friend I gave one to said she felt more comfortable and confident going to new places using it. Finally, when it lost the satellite signal in heavily treed rural areas it held the destination data and quickly recovered when it got a signal again.

The free update had to be done within the first month or so of the purchase date and somehow the friend I gave it to missed it even tho she thought she had registered it properly. She contacted them by email; they responded within a day and she also spoke to them. Garmin let her access and make the update even tho she technically missed the target date for it. They were quick to respond, verbally walked her thru it, polite, professional yet pleasant to deal with; their customer service was outstanding.

I think someone still needs to know how to read a map, use written directions and have some idea of where they're driving. But, all things considered, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Garmin GPS again; very, very satisfied. If this died or was lost, I'd replace it ASAP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 285WT review, June 26, 2010 By snowmanThis review is from: Garmin 285W/285WT nuvi 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic (Electronics) The Garmin has been very accurate. The touch pad is simple and easy to use to get to a location, as long as you understand that you may need to input the exact address unless the destination has a unique name in your city/ town. Otherwise, you will get accurate turn by turn directions, to include recalculations if you miss the turn.
