STOP PAYING FOR TRASH!

Have you ever spent money on trash?

NO NEVER?!

Perhaps not intentionally, But maybe you have done this quite unintentionally. I am talking about you buying garnets.

Many people spend their hard earned money on worthless stuff, simply because they do not know the basics about how to choose garnets.

An English tourist came to me and proudly showed me a large red gemstone about the size of a peanut he had purchased on the border of Myanmar for $500. He had been told that it was smuggled from gem-rich Myanmar, and that it was a ruby worth $5,000 or more. Knowing that I was a gemologist, he wanted a certificate of authenticity from me. I looked at it and suspected it was a fake; but I first examined it in my laboratory. It turned out to be a man-made, synthetic garnet worth about $20. He was devastated.

BE WISE AND AVOID BEING CHEATED

Here are some simple ways to avoid being cheated.

When you purchase a garnet or any garnet jewelry, just ask the salesman whether the gem is a synthetic or a natural one. In most countries, the government requires them to give a disclosure.

If the gem is expensive, ask for a certificate from a reputed qualified appraiser.

Genuine garnets are not very expensive. But some garnets of rare color, brilliance and size can fetch very high prices. So before you buy expensive garnets or garnet jewelry, gather the information your need from reliable sources

Being forewarned is to be forearmed.

If, as a consumer, you are careful about the quality of milk which you buy for a few dollars, shouldn't you be more careful about spending hundreds or thousands on jewelry?

THE BEST TIME TO PURCHASE GARNET JEWELRY?

Have you ever thought of giving a gift to yourself or a friend using some beautiful garnet gemstones.

Perhaps you thought of giving your dearest friend a January birthstone for a birthday or graduation. Why not give an inexpensive gift that lasts forever?

Here is some information that will show you that you should decide NOW.

The prices of garnets and jewelry are bound to go up because two important reasons.

1. Exchange rates. The value of a dollar is by no means appreciating. It is falling DAILY

2. Inflation The rate of inflation is taking a steep upward curve all over the world.

BE WISE Purchase these beauties NOW, OR just snuggle close to your significant other and whisper the idea sweetly. Procrastination will mercilessly rob you. Do not be a victim of some unscrupulous salesmen either.

HOW LONG DO GARNETS LAST?

When you buy lovely gemstones, you want to make sure that it will last. In order to find lasting garnets or even other stones, you must understand MOH'S SCALE. This is a scale from 1 to 10 where 1 is for the softest of gemstones and 10 the hardest. By the way, this is not a linear scale

On Moh's scale, a pencil lead has a hardness of 1; a fingernail has hardness 2.5; a copper penny, about 3.5; a knife blade, 5.5; window glass, 5.5; steel file, 6.5. Using these ordinary materials of known hardness can be a simple way to approximate the position of a mineral on the scale, says Wikipedia.

Diamond takes pride of place with the number 10. Fortunately, the number for garnets is 7 and that means that it is one that can last forever if you give the minimum care it needs. I have seen estate garnets that have been handed down for many generations. Give a gift of natural garnet jewelry and the proud owner will hand it down from generation to generation.

I will share more information on how to care for garnet jewelry when you write to me for it.

A garnet may be given as a gem for the 2nd and 6th wedding anniversary of your friend

Garnet occurs in every color except blue and most varieties are named for their color. Rhodolite is a purplish red, hessonite is the name for an orange, cinnamon, or pinkish variety. Tsavorite is the name given to dark green grossularite. Uvarovite and demantoid are also green varieties.

Pyrope garnets are purplish red, orangy red, crimson, or dark red. Spessartite garnets range from yellow and orange through red to reddish brown to dark black/brown. Color change garnets exhibit a "alexandrite-like" effect when viewed in natural light or artificial lighting.

Matching colors for your dresses can be found just among garnets.

You do not have to wait for the night to see stars! There are some garnets that when exposed to a point-source light will display 6-rayed stars! (Some have seen stars of a different kind when they get beaten up, but that is outside the scope of this web site!)

The price of a garnet is governed by the law of supply and demand. Fortunately, the price of garnets is not propped up like De Beers props up the price of diamonds. You pay for its real value.
