Garter Belts are Sexy Lingerie!

You may have heard the term skirtini or garter belt skirt and wondered what is the meaning? Simply put the term skirtini is used to describe a garter belt that is made to look like a skimpy mini skirt with garters hanging down to hold up your stockings. These skirtini's are flirty and sexy as they are super shorts, stretch to fit your curves and provide minimum coverage, but more than a standard garter belt which in many instances is not much wider than a belt. Many of these garter belt skirts come with matching tops or bras and they are sexy lingerie that can be worn with matching stockings and the standard sexy high heels.
Unless the "skirt" is snug fitting it may not look good under a mini skirt so these skirtinis are often worn in the privacy of ones bedroom as they are flirty and fun. While skirtini's are a variation of the garter belt they all serve the same function and that is to hold up your stockings.

In the past garter belts were fastened in the back with either a hook and eye fastener, or a clip of some kind with little adjustability. Recently stretch fabrics allow a woman to wear the garter belt simply by slipping it on.

Many garter belts are really garter shapers that slim a womans mid section and have removable garters that allow her to wear stockings or not. Since garter belts have been around for many years, many of the older "foundations" had the ability to attach garter straps when stockings were worn. Shapers have been around for a very long time except they weren't called shapers but girdles. My mother had a collection of girdles and they were severe looking and had boning or metal struts to insure that she looked shaped with no bulges or muffin tops. While I never discussed them with her it is clear that these shapers were uncomfortable and were thrown out in the early sixties as they were no longer fashionable. Enter the shapers of today that are light and stretchy. Of course shapers cannot do the job of a day at the gym for many months but they do serve a purpose. Try one on before buying to see if it meets your expectations as they don't have boning or other panels that will keep you in line. They are really meant to provide gentle shaping and make you look better under snug fitting fashions.

It is no accident that photographs of pin up girls in flirty yet sexy lingerie are wearing garter belts and stockings. Wildly popular in the 20's, 30's and 40's, the garter belt is popular again, thanks in part to the sexy pin up girls and burlesque.
There is something very erotic about thigh high stockings attached to the garter belt with garter straps. Instantly your mind goes to a time before many of us were born but the simplicity and suggestive nature of garter belts is apparent. Why are garter belts so sexy? Perhaps it is the time necessary to get dressed. Putting on stockings one at a time and then having to attach them in four places on each stocking is like a strip tease in reverse. Taking them off requires the same time and patience. No wonder many women will have nothing to do with them when no stockings or pantyhose are easier, cooler and lets face it runs in hosiery is a drag.
Perhaps it is those old movies where stockings were valuable and expensive. Where G.I. Joe gave the beautiful Italian or German woman a pair of nylons and they were treasured as they were so unavailable and so feminine. Possible it is because they simply look naughty in a nostalgic or romantic way? As an icon of the 30', 40' and 50's nylon stockings embodied women and the back seam stockings were enough to send a man into a tizzy. Back them women covered their breasts in silly looking bullet bras, wore full back panties and no one had ever heard of breast implants. Women were as sexy then as women are today but there certainly was more mystery about a women during that time.

Now you can turn on the television or open up a web page and see Brittney Spears with no panties or just as easily Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan as well. It isn't even much of a scandal anymore. Back then the idea of seeing a woman's private parts simply out of the question, don't ask! Women's panties, bras and lingerie were unmentionables and rarely ever seen except by the men in their lives, never perfect strangers and millions at that. Women still occasionally fainted in those days. Imagine a strong woman being portrayed in the movies as fainting when she got excited or upset. No way, today she would kick you in the crotch and slice your throat while taking care of three children and looking like a movie star, practicing medicine and being a loving wife.

A woman wearing panties, stockings, bra and a garter belt is both sexy and capturing a classic sexy look from days gone by. Bullet bras, sheer panties, full back panties and polka dot bras are all popular once again and then there are garter belts. Many women will dismiss them as too much hassle when simply wearing pantyhose or panties is enough. No doubt this view will keep the sales of garter belts down as there is no doubt that these classic lingerie items require some time and effort. The final look is well worth the effort, though.

Garter belts have survived, are easier and more comfortable to wear, but they still have that certain allure somewhat undefinable. You can find leather garter belts that are off the chart sexy as well as vinyl garter belts that are another look altogether. Conventional garter belts are often made of satin, stretch lace and sheer mesh with a high level of spandex for stretch and a comfortable fit and feel. The fetish wear line of lingerie includes both the leather and vinyl garter belts and is popular among burlesque performers as it is something many women have never seen or thought of wearing. While very sexy it is also unusual and performers are always looking for their own look and not something you can find at the malls.

Burlesque performers and exotic dancers share some characteristics, particularly the desire to look good on stage. Fortunately there are no rules anymore about what women can and should wear. Pin up girls certainly tend to the fashions of the 30's through 50's and in many cases there is more coverage and more bubbling sensuality that suggests sex without ever saying it. She is the embodiment of pin up sexuality without taking off her clothes.

All these performers share sexy lingerie as a part of their outfits and costumes and owe much to the burlesque performers of the past. While burlesque faded from the scene, the burlesque performers have opened it to a whole new audience and if you look closely you will certainly see my old favorite, the garter belt.
