Gary Johnson Will Run For President in 2012!

New Mexico's ex governor is getting ready for a run for president in 2012 and will declare his presidency on April 21st at the state capital building in New Hampshire. According to a report he won't be forming an exploratory committee like many of his other republican colleagues instead he said he will be starting his campaign officially on April 21st after the big announcement.

Gary recently launched a 501(c)(3) organization called Our America Initiative and put out a new book titled, "7 Principles of Good Government". Johnson, as of recent, has been doing a lot of traveling around America and engaging in speaking events which initially sparked rumors that he would run. He has made three visits to Iowa and South Carolina, and six to New Hampshire.

Some argue Johnson's appearance on the Colbert Report back in May helped boost his popularity, what Colbert himself would call the "Colbert bump", and thus further helping a 2012 campaign run. The support group, Johnson for America, has recently sprung up in an attempt to persuade the governor to run.

The Issues

The National Debt
Through his non-profit campaign Johnson is raising the issues that America is facing today and speaking at events all over the country in order to create awareness. The first issue Johnson is facing is the overwhelming deficit America has accrued over the years. He believes this is not only a challenge, but one of the biggest threats to America. In an effort to reduce the deficit Johnson advocates we make cuts in spending to defense that fund overseas campaigns such as in Afghanistan. He argues further that if fighting and occupying Afghanistan didn't work for the Russians it isn't going to work for us and it will be at great cost.

He has a three pronged approach to getting our economy back on track.
1) Cut Our Spending - To do this he suggests that America make some cuts to programs such as medicare, medicaid, and social security. Reallocate defense spending to defend America, rather than wasting funds abroad in Iraq and Afghanistan. And lastly, to reduce subsidies to special interest groups such as agriculture, transportation and housing.
2) Cut Taxes - Stop taxing investment and savings, restructure the tax code to stop rewarding special interests, and create a flat tax for consumers and income.
3) Limit Government Involvement in the Economy - Stop corporate bailouts and funding of special interests with tax payers dollars, place restrictions on the federal reserve, and broaden free trade.

Drugs
Johnson's most controversial top is his stance on the legalization of marijuana claiming that it should be regulated and taxed by the American government in the same manner as tobacco. He is advocating for more drug reform of more serious drugs such as heroin and claims by criminalizing heroin we don't address the problem of addiction. Instead of locking people up for more serious drug additions, we should look for treatment rather than wasting tax payers dollars on prison expense.

Johnson calmly states that marijuana is no different than alcohol in the sense that both impair you and that use should not be encouraged. However the fact that people smoke and get marijuana is inevitable. So we should legalize it and impose similar laws that prohibit harm to other individuals such as banning smoking marijuana while operating a vehicle. Johnson has said that smoking marijuana, while not harming anyone, is a popularly accepted in America.

"When you ask people, "How many in this room believe that smoking marijuana within the confines of your own home, doing no harm to anybody except arguably yourself, how many think someone belongs in jail for that?," After asking this question in an interview about 90% of the room raised their hands in agreement.

Civil Liberties
Johnson has a strong stance against the government getting involved in our personal lives and limiting civil liberties. If an individual is not harming anybody, then he or she should not be burdened by new government regulation or policies. He believes the constitution should be interpreted in its original meaning and openly stated that every time a law is created a freedom is taken away. In essence he believes warrantless wiretaps, gun legislation, speech, search and seizures without due cause are all unjustified under the constitution. The ex-governor supports civil unions between same sex couples, but does not support the legalization of marriage.
