Recent News from Gary Spatz
Gary Spatz Joins %u201CJudy Moody and the Not So Bummer Summer%u201D
The film is based on the critically acclaimed international children's book series Judy Moody by Megan McDonald, scripted by McDonald and Kathy Waugh, and directed by John Schultz (Aliens in the Attic, The Honeymooners). Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness (Precious) are producing.
Gary Spatz is one of the most highly respected and active on-set coaches for young actors. His initial project was Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (1989) segueing into a six-year stint as acting coach for The New Mickey Mouse Club (1990-1995), Roseanne (1990-1997), and Everybody Loves Raymond (2003 - 2005). These credits and many others led to Mr. Spatz founding "The Playground", which quickly became one of the top training grounds for young actors in the United States.
"Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is the first feature-length theatrical production I've worked on in many years," said Gary. "A television series usually requires two or three days a week during a season, leaving me plenty of time to devote to The Playground and private coaching. I've turned down features over the last five years because with a movie, you must be on the set for the duration. Essentially, you can disappear for 6-12 weeks. With all my other responsibilities, I couldn't do that - and wouldn't do that."
After being offered the Judy Moody script, Gary realized that he had to be a part of the project. "It had that special quality of being very sweet, very funny, but not at all caustic or cynical," Gary explained. "You don't come across those kind of scripts very often."
Gary was determined to work on the film, and the producers definitely wanted him deeply involved. He was thrilled when (executive-producer) Bobbie Sue Luther and (Director) John Schultz, offered him this project. "We all bent over backwards to accommodate a schedule in pre-production that would allow for rehearsals with this gifted young cast of actors."
Tell us what you think!
We're always excited to hear from our Students and their Parents.

Hey Gayla & Gary!!
I know, I know, so much has been happening for my son, Matthew Jacob Wayne and you, Gayla, have told me to update you so you can post up all the good news here!! Well, finally, I’m finding the time to do so. So…………..here you go!!!!
Matthew has just finished filming on his 6th short film, in the past 8 months. Two of these projects are already through post production and ‘in the can’, as they say. In fact, we received the DVD’s, for Matthew’s reel and resume very recently, for the films: SHELTER: THE BUNKER and WURM, both short films. The BIG news is that Matthew has been submitted as a potential nominee for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR in a SHORT FILM in the 5 to 11 year old age group, for his role in WURM, at next years 2011 Young Artists Awards!!! The YAA’s, as their known as, take place here in Los Angeles sometime in the early spring, usually the first part of April. If indeed Matthew gets this nomination, win, or lose, a lot of the credit goes to The Playground, especially you, Gayla, for your incredible one on one coaching of Matthew, in preparation for the many roles and auditions he has done over the past 10 to 12 months.
On the other films: REDEMPTION, OPERATION: BAZOOKA BOOM, REVOLUTION, and TWO DE FORCE, Matthew has wrapped shooting on all but REVOLUTION and TWO DE FORCE, which he has some ‘pick ups’ to do on REVOLUTION and as for TWO DE FORCE, the writer/director has announced that this independent short film is now being expanded to be an Independent Feature Film! All of the cast members are being ‘retained’, for the film’s shooting schedule to resume once again, as soon as the additional screenplay and script are ready to go, which are being fine tuned by the writer as I type this letter. Therefore, Matthew will soon be back to shooting on his first ever feature length film, most likely right after the holidays!!
Matthew also was recently selected as one of the cast members, for a table read through of the script, for another feature film project, which I cannot discuss at this time. However, the fact that he has been invited to participate in the table read, gaurantees him an audition for the role in the film when that process starts in the future sometime. Just getting the chance to be a part of this and be with and in front of the producers and directors at the table read, is an excellent opportunity for Matthew to show “his stuff”, and have a leg up at the upcoming auditions. Very cool stuff indeed!!!
So, as you can see, Matthew’s been one pretty busy little actor! :) I did not go into the many auditions he’s been on, but suffice to say, he has had several and we’re awaiting any words of callbacks still on a few. Just as recently as early this week, Matthew had an agent meeting, with a potential new agency interested in representing him theatrically and commercially. Well, he more than impressed them and we are in the process of switching agents, which I and Matthew firmly believe will bring him even more opportunities!!!
We cannot express enough our gratitude to The Playground, to you, Gayla and are forever indebted to the one and only Mr. Gary Spatz, for his insight, inspiration, guidance, mentorship and unending genorosity. THANK YOU, GARY!!!
All the best,
Russ (dad) &
Matthew Jacob Wayne (talent / Playground Student)

- My Daughter LOVES The Playground! My daugher is 11 and she loves acting. She recently gained some experience acting in local stage productions of Tom Sawyer and Bye Bye Birdie. Her lessons at The Playground have been such a great complement to her drama experience. From her Tom Sawyer performance to her part in Bye Bye Birdie, we saw her confidence, projection, and enthusiasm leap incredibly, and much credit goes to The Playground. Just a couple of weeks ago she tried out for a part in an upcoming production of Hello Dolly and she landed a leading part! Thank you to Gary and staff for making learning so much fun and memorable for our daughter.

- Most of the time, people only give a review to complain. However, in this case, I am writing to let EVERYONE know what a GREAT experience my 14 year old daughter is having at Gary Spatz “The Playground”. My daughter took acting lessons (from a well-known acting studio), while we were living in Atlanta, Georgia. Even though she had fun there, she never learned what she has learned in just a few weeks at “The Playground”. She tells me every week something new she has learned. She is thriving in the class, as well as having fun. I once read that “The Playground” was only good for very young “stars”. To the contrary! My daughter will tell you that they teach her very well—it’s not just fun and games!!! They give her homework, that she is excited about doing. The staff is extremely friendly, and the price for 6 months is, with no doubt, worth the HOURS of training she receives each week. Even though Gary Spatz is not her teacher, he always takes time out of his busy schedule and talks with the class—and with her as an individual. We give Gary Spatz “The Playground” a perfect 10!!!! Thank you--to all their friendly staff!!!
