My favorite gas credit cards
One day while I was filling up my car at the local gas station (Kwik Trip) I noticed an advertisement at the pump for their credit card. They were offering $20 in free gas and a free XM radio for getting their card. I couldn't refuse, so I went to their website and applied for it. I was instantly approved--I think most people are, seeing how desperate they are for customers--for $500 and received my card in about a week.
And sure enough, I received a $20 credit to my card and a coupon for a Sirius XM Radio. So far they have been a good creditor, reporting to all three credit bureaus and I haven't had any trouble. I found a little extra bonus too when I signed up for online statements--I received an additional $10 credit to my card. And also, I have access to coupons for free and discounted food and items in their store.
The only downside I can think of about strictly gas cards is the high APR. Most non-branded cards (without a Visa logo, for example) have a very high interest rate--quite often far over 20%. I don't carry a balance with a gas card, I usually pay it all off before any interest accumulates.
In addition to strictly gas cards, some Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express gas cards give money back, such as the Discover® Open Road (SM) Card and its brother for students, the Discover® Student Open Road (SM) Card. This card gives 5% cash back on fuel and automotive purchases. I find it to be one of the best gas cards out there, and the APR is much, much lower than that of traditional gas cards. The interest rate of my Open Road card is 16.99%, so that is much better than the usual 21-25%.
