US Gas Prices
Several charts are included below to show how the United States fares in terms of gas prices compared to the rest of the world. The US has only a very small percentage of the worlds oil reserves. The real answer is the development.. and incentive to
develop alternative forms of energy. WE as a nation need to change the way we fuel our cars.... heat our homes, and provide energy to our factories. WE are in the perfect situation to make this happen. As prices rise, Americans, who are very reluctant to change, look at the alternatives, and begin to realize that only through real change, and research and development can there be any solution.
* * Nearest price chart accurate t0 Feb 24 2012 .... Blue price chart (above) is shown in Indian Rupees, this is not important, it is meant to show what we pay, compared to what the rest of the world pays for their fuel. You can see we are well below the world average, and you can note who the only counties that pay less than we do, are. Also... the other chart shows what PERCENTAGE of what we pay is taxes. We basically pay for the fuel itself (processing, export costs, etc), with very little tax attached to it... compared with the rest of the world. And STILL.... Americans... complain.

Gas Prices 2012 - Oil production in the US, only the facts folks.
According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, 37 million offshore acres were offered in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas exploration and production last year. The current 2011 average for U.S. petroleum production (through October 2011) is 7,782 thousand barrels per day. This is the highest number of barrels in more than a decade - since 8,000 barrels a day was achieved in 1998.
According to figures from the Energy Information Administration. EIA estimates that the current 11-month average for U.S. dependence on foreign oil for 2011 is 45.4 percent. That is the lowest level since 1995.
While the annual average price of a gallon of gasoline in 2011 was $3.52, the highest AVERAGE in history... the highest PRICE ever for fuel in this country was in July of 2008, during the Bush administration. Economists believe the turnaround (in pricing) was due to the onslaught of the deepest part of our recession, and in turn, Europe's which wildly curbed global demand... and reduced prices for the next several months.
Oil consumption has been falling in all major industrialized countries, including the United States, Japan, Germany and Britain. Sales of big cars and trucks in the US have fallen significantly. As we develop new ways to deliver energy more efficiently, whether burning the oil better, by modernizing equiptment and using autos that have the ability to consume the oil more cleanly and slowly... .... by adding new energy sources to the mix / grid ... these changes have the ability to reduce US consumption of oil even more in the coming years.
Europe is the world leader in renewable energy generation, Figures for 2010 revealed that renewable sources accounted for 16.9 per cent of Germany's gross electricity consumption last year, a four-fold increase over the previous 20 years. The share of renewable energy across the EU's generation mix has almost doubled over the past decade, from 5.4 per cent to 9 percent between 1999 and 2009, according to EU statistics. The figures, produced by Eurostat showed that the proportion of energy provided by oil, solid fuel and nuclear all fell over the last decade as well.
All 27 member states increased their share of renewable energy over the period, the largest increases coming from Denmark, where the renewable sector grew from meeting 8 percent of energy demand to 17 percent in 2009. The US is WAY behind in efforts to move renewable energy development forward, which would reduce our dependance on foreign (or even domestic) oil.
Contrary to popular belief, most people are surprised to learn that the country from which the United States imports the greatest amount of oil is Canada. In recent years, the United States has imported approximately 200 million barrels of crude oil annually from Canada.
Saudi Arabia comes in at second with about 150 million barrels. The United States imports about the same amount of oil from Mexico as it does from Saudi Arabia annually. Other countries from which the United States imports oil are: Venezuela, Nigeria, Iraq, the United Kingdom, Norway, Angola, Algeria and Colombia.
Drilling is not the answer. The answer is modernizing our current oil dependent infrastructure. Giving homes and businesses incentive to switch to natural gas, is a great way to create a transition. This is a cheaper, cleaner alternative, which buys us the time do develop new technologies and incorporate more into our grid.
Only about 2% of the current US population has turned to Hybrid vehicles for relief. This is mostly due to the fact that in the US many people rotate their cars and replace them every 3 years of so. The payoff on these cars usually occurs after the 3rd year of ownership (due to the fact that the hybrid vehicle costs more up front than the comparable traditional car.) We are making leeway here. Prices of hybrids have come down, and certainly a family that really wants to save, can turn to the least expensive hybrids (like the Honda Insight) for example, and actually pay significantly less for that car, than for almost any other new car. But Americans LOVE THIER cars, and may are not willing to sacrifice style, status and luxury to save. It's just the way Americans are. WE are spoiled.
The good news is the Obama administration has put rules in place ensuring that all new production cars are now being built by a more fuel efficient standard. As cars become more efficient, hybrids become less expensive, and fuel prices continue to rise, I am sure we will begin to see a change in in the cars the American people are driving. It just takes time to get it all into place. As we pull out of this recession, more and more people are opting to buy new cars. New-vehicle sales in the United States were unexpectedly strong in January, an early sign that the auto industry could have its best year since 2007. Sales increased 11.4 percent from January 2011, according to the research firm Autodata, and this trend is projected to continue into 2012. It's a small step, but a welcome one.

A used hybrid is a great way to save. Toyota is the farthest along in it's hybrid technology, selling it's FIRST hybrid Prius in 1997!
Getting better fuel economy doesn't have to break the bank. The 2008 Prius can get over 40 MPG, that's almost double what a traditional car that size gets... especially if you are already driving an older car.

I am proud to announce that I just had my best tank of gas EVER with my 8 month old Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Last fill I was at
30.4 MPG
which is my best to date. Optimal temperatures contributed to this, in the 70s regularly. But this included two long highway trips, and the Hybrid does better with local driving, so I was impressed I was able to get this number. This truck seats 7... did I mention that? - Great stuff. It's all about being green. I work at it, and try to get others on board also. Things are getting better, but there is still a lot to do. Seems to me like we've reached the tipping point though, and mentality is beginning to change.
