My Constant Search For Gas Guzzling Alternatives With A Humorous Twist
This is a highly discussed subject..and I want this lens to be a place to share your input and discuss.
I like many others need answers!
I struggle to maintain a gameface as gas prices run higher...like someone is playing a huge practical joke on us and the automotive industry!
This lens gives a lighthearted view on the current crisis, as well as education links for alternative fuel vehicles.

Two Full Size Pickups and a Prius

As an owner of TWO full size pickups, it was imperative to weigh our options. We chose to purchase a Toyota Prius last January and let me tell you...with the ever gouging prices, it has become the best choice we ever made.
I laugh at gas prices because it has become so ridiculous it is almost comical. I put premium in my Prius and it costs about $45. Gas or diesel in our trucks???? HAHAHA. Truck - $150 and full size diesel? - $190
I laugh because these trucks get LESS miles per tank then the Prius does! It is crazy and needless to say...the trucks are parked

What really happened to the electric car? This completely revised and updated edition of the "bible of electric car books" gives you the component-by-component coverage you need to convert your gas-guzzler to a clean-running electric powered vehicle. The book begins with a history of electric vehicles and the latest international advances in EV technology, and goes on to describe every component-from motor to chassis-showing how to put them all together to create a working vehicle.
Gas Pump Robbery

Find The Lowest Gas Prices In Your Area
Every time I drive past a gas pump I am surprised. If it is a little lower than yesterday I top off my tank..if it is unusually high I simply just let it slide. It seems to have become a wild goose chase for the cheap(er) pump.
What I have noticed however are that the gas pump crowds have not ceased. People continue to fill up their big gas guzzling machines (which I have a couple, I just drive them when necessary)
I wonder if habits will change?

My husband and I are investigating biodiesel for the big F-350 in our driveway which simply costs too much to drive. I am concerned with getting the material to produce biodiesel...we just don't know.

In the constant search for alternatives and answers, I worry about "bandwagons" and other alternatives that will come on the market and fade like Betamax.

How Much Money Did You Give To The Gas Pump Today?
What Will This All Change?

What will all this change? Will the pump prices finally drop? Will everyone go electric? Will we not be able to put gas in our classic cars anymore? What will happen to American culture and our love for the road?
I have already seen trucks go down in value. My Blue Book value for my 2000 Silverado dropped over $1K in the past year from what it is supposed to be...and will anyone take it on a trade? NO
Is everything that WAS of value going to become disposable?
How will this affect travel and tourism? It has already affected freight costs and there has been a rising increase in gas pump crimes and driveaways.
I am full of unanswered questions!
Food for thought

Things Will Change and Public Transportation Will Become Mainstream For Everyone
purplelady says:
There are those people who will BE ABLE to pay anything; but even their numbers will dwindle as gas prices continue to rise. We must remember that high gas prices affect not just higher costs at the "pump".
The Public Transportation alternative will depend entirely on what alternatives are available in their areas and how accessible they are. People in rural areas are even harder hit because they often have to drive further to get to their work or other services and there is no public transportation available.
Personally, we are taking fewer day trips and are using our car to do our shopping and errands in one time frame. Based on what coupons we have for that week, we will plan a route to get our week's shopping done combined with our other errands done together utilizing some of the gas mileage saving techniques in the practice of hypermiling. I think that this is where the American people will show their own ingenuity.

I was tempted to vote for the other camp, but I think it's possible the gas prices combined with a slumping economy will start changing the way many Americans live. I hear travel by train is getting a little more attention lately.

I live in a very small town. So far I'm still driving my car for out of town trips, but I outfitted a bicycle that I can ride to work and back, and to the store after work. I also bought spare tubes for it. Though I hadn't ridden a bike much in the last twenty years, I've been doing it and having a lot of fun on it. Posted June 24, 2008 |
