What are the top tips to save gas, increase m.p.g. and save money? Get informed...
In no particular order here are some of my tips to save gas that, when used, could save you as much as 10% on your fuel bills this month. More if all the tips apply to you.
The problem is that these days a 10% saving will probably just be eaten up by next month's fuel increase at the pumps.
1) So tip #1 is to fill up every time you go to the gas station! Prices will only be higher next time you visit :-( On the other hand this advice flies in the face of tip #12 - 'lighten your load' so you decide.
2) While you're at the gas station check your tire pressure is correct. When you have time ask your local mechanic to check the tires 'balance' too.
3) While your at the mechanic shop ask him/her to clean or change your air filter and to tune up the engine.

4) Go easy on the gas pedal when starting up or accelerating. If using a manual use the gears to gradualy build up speed.
5) Avoid braking, when slowing ease off the gas instead. But in a manual don't go 'down' through the gears, stay in high and change to a lower gear when increasing speed again.
6) Listen for the 'sweet spot' when changing gears to know when your engine is at it's happiest i.e. not straining and over revving.
7) Stuck in a jam? Turn off your engine - meditate.
8) Why not 'coast' down those big hills? Get into 'Neutral' or simply depress the clutch. No good in Florida, Illinois, Louisiana or Kansas I'm afraid.
9) Do one BIG shop in one BIG superstore once a week. At last, a reason for the 'Mall'.
10) Shop on the net and take advantage if you local supermarket offers 'Free Delivery'.
11) Avoid Cruise Control on the freeway, it's not as fuel efficient as you are.
12) Lighten your load. Carry a minimum of passengers and stuff (unless you're in a car pool).
13) Make sure your fuel cap is tightly screwed in place. Don't let any of your precous fuel evaporate from a loose fitting fitting!
14) Get into that fast truck's slipstream like they do at Daytona ( eerm not sure about this one).
15) Turn off the air-conditioning.
16) Reduce 'drag' keep your windows closed. Remove roof rack if it's not being used.
These tips WILL save you some money but you should seriously consider fitting a clever gizmo/gadget to your car's engine that improves the combustion process and saves you real money fast! Tell me more >>>

Tips on what NOT to do to save gas!
Maybe there are some ideas that are best avoided...
I mentioned in the gas saving tips above the idea of riding the slipstream of a faster moving vehicle so that it 'pulls' you along thus saving fuel. It was a JOKE! This sort of thing is best left to Formula #1 drivers!Another thing I came across when researching for this page was the idea that adding about 3 fluid ounces of acetone to 10 gallons of fuel.
I read the feedback from those saying it works and the scoffing of the skeptics. I also looked at the fact that acetone 'eats' plastics. My final judgement therefore was that I'd test it on an old clunker but that would be it!
I reckon that someone testing it will, subconciously, be driving better ( see fuel saving tips above) and it is THIS that creates the small - 5-10% - increases in mileage that they tout as proof of its efficacy. I've still got an open mind though if someone wants to do a comprehensive test.
