The Right of Gay Marriage

Should Gay Marriage be a Right?
I know, I know, your religion says it's wrong. That is fine; your religion doesn't have to marry them. The world has hundreds, if not thousands of religions. Why should the government make something illegal because one religion or even a hundred religions says it is wrong? Laws should be about morals, not religion. Laws should also be something which doesn't outcast a particular group of otherwise normal people. Depending on the studies, anywhere between 5-10% of Americans are homosexual. This is up to 30 million people. That is the equivalent of telling everyone in the state of California that they cannot marry.
Besides, in this day-and-age there isn't a "sanctity of marriage"; roughly 50% of all marriages end in divorce. If you want to save the sanctity of marriage, support making divorce illegal.
UPDATE: Gay Marriage is now legal in New York.

What are Your Thoughts on Gay Marriage?
Should homosexuals be allowed to marry?

For Gay Marriage
greenlungsofpoland says:
Worldwide gay marriage is the only answer!! .. Just get real already i spend six months in Poland, 3 months in the UK and 3 months in USA every year and guess what i am tired of hearing same shit different country. I love my life i love my life partner... I spent most of my life in the gay shade now let me shine!! Live it - however with who ever you choose.. We marry in the UK in less than 8 months and simply cannot wait.. come on guys Love is Love the world over!!
ShellysLGBT says:
As a woman married to a woman living in a state where our marriage isn't considered valid, I'm dumbfounded. We're productive members of society and we love and support each other the same as the heterosexual couples all around us. Why are we 2nd class citizens compared to them?
crstnblue says:
As long as a couple does not bring any harm to anybody around or try to influence and/ or force others to do certain things against their wish, we shall not be hypocrites and let people opt for their own happiness, either as straight or homosexual individuals. The most it counts is the feeling, the care and love which defines a person, not the sex... which is an act, at bottom line

The world can always use more love :)
MaxReily says:
Yes, definitely. They pay taxes, they should have the rights every taxpayer has. I've never understood how gay marriage would threaten heterosexual marriage. No one's religion should prevent someone else from marrying. A civil marriage is just as legal as a church wedding. Stop the hate!

Would You Support Civil Unions Over Marriage?
Alright, so you don't like the use of the word "marriage" when it comes to homosexuals. That's fine. If it were up to me, "marriage" would be strictly done in religious ceremonies and "civil unions" would be a government union between two people.
Currently, even in some states which civil unions are allowed the people receiving them don't hold the same rights as those married. If the wording of marriage changed to civil union, then everyone would be equal under the government. However, I don't see any of this happening in the United States anytime soon. If this did happen, would you be any less frustrated?

- It's the same thing - just different interpretation to please certain ears...
It's weird, I'm a straight person but was impressed with strong relationships seen between homosexuals and sometimes I wonder why church put rules on this while they are doing these things so often and certainly not from love - and hope I'll not be misunderstood on this issue

- Only if "civil unions" for same sex couples were equal in every way to marriage in every state. I'm heterosexual, but if I should ever remarry, it would be in a civil ceremony. I don't need the blessing of any church to justify my commitment. Civil ceremonies are legal marriages where I live, but only between heterosexuals.

- I'm in the UK, which has civil unions for gay couples and which treats those civil unions as equivalent to marriage. The system seems to work well.

- I think it would create less stress for those that are directly impacted by the current laws. Having the laws support a "civil union" would help people in gay relationships get things like insurance for their partner and children.

- This is an excellent lens on a vital topic. People are being denied their rights, and this must change. Thanks for presenting this issue.
