Gay Art History

Gay Art History huh? What does that entail? Well for our purposes here, it entails Art throughout history that has a homoerotic appeal. Sometimes that will include gay artists, other times art depicting men that was or is appreciated by men.

History of Homoeroticism: Rictor Norton's 1998 History of Homoeroticism - No images, but a good overview of the subject
Androphile: This nice site has a museum section with homoerotic artworks reproduced from around the world. The selection is limited, but the art quality is nice and the information mostly accurate - have a nice section as well on the Ganymede images that were once on the Budweiser beer advertisements in the U.S.
Man Without Clothes: A nice take on male nudity in history with some galleries attached - also has some essays with images on the nature of art
Homoerotic Art Museum: A large collection of homoerotic art from around the world - the images are not clickable or able to be enlarged and the information is sometimes suspect, but feel free to browse and then do separate research on an artwork if you like it enough - odds are there are higher resolution copies online elsewhere
Fallen Warriors: Fallen Warriors as Mass Media Stars: Representations of Heike Monogatari in the Edo Period of Japan
Schwules Museum: The Gay Museum in Berlin - they have exhibitions of gay artwork regularly - check their site for the latest
Gay History in Postage Stamps: An interesting site with many galleries of postage stamps with male homoerotic images

Homobilia: A gallery selling homoerotic artworks, both past and present - some nice 19th & 20th century vintage ephemera and photographs

Hall Carpenter Archives: GLBT Archives in the U.K. with extensive links to collections in the U.K. and the rest of Europe
Wickford Glyptothek: scant site with a few nice collections - for example: Pediment sculptures from the Temple of Aphaia at Aegina
