RD Riccoboni's GLBT Community Art

Here I am posting art I have created over the years from the gay, GLBT, LGBT, Queer (or whatever the catch phrase of the week is) community.

The art shown here encompases some of my gay community themed art created from about 1990 upto current.  I will post some commentary since I am constantly asked about what things might mean or what was I trying to convey to the viewer in certain paintings. Some art is Historical in the sense that I like to capture events in the community in painting.  Others are simply paintings I enjoyed creating, commission work, and simply just a pretty picture.

I have steered away from the common perspective that gay art is simply art of the male nude, or a sexual encounter between the same sexes. Though I have created nudes of the male figure who is to say it is gay art, perhaps it is only gay to the viewer seeing the art anyway.  Being in this diverse community, as an artist, I have brought that diversity into my art portfolio by portraying the culture and its many activities outside of the boudoir.

When I began painting the gay community it was after I was inspired by A David Hockney show I had seen many years at Yale University's British collection. As a young man I saw his gorgeous paintings and drawings and thought to myself "I want to do paintings like this someday." The fun thing about this was in 1996 I had a book signing of 'Rainbow Nation - 40 paintings from the gay community' in the very same building where I was inspired years before. I also got to meet Paul Cadmus at the same time, probably my favorite all time artist and the greatist figurative american artist to this day. Talk about full circle.  These two men are probably the greatest influence on my art. There are many others too such as Andy Warhol, Deni Ponty, Delmas Howe, Ivy Bottini and Georgia O'Keefe, and Art collectors and historians Morris Kight, Aubrey Walter, Fritz Lohman and Charles Leslie.

You can purchase prints and fun gift items with my art work on them here.

Artist Statement:

Color is the first thing you notice about my work. What makes it 'pop' is the placement of color and texture.  My palette is derived from the prismatic colors in the original rainbow flag which represent sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony, peace and spirit.

As a painter I am a visual storyteller. An intuitive message comes when creating the art - perhaps it is playful, calming, erotic, disturbing, political, or even sacred. I like to flirt with the issues and experiences we face in everyday life, the things we do, the buildings we construct and live in and the destination places we congregate and go to that define our lives.

Whether positive, humorous, or thought provoking, my work portrays events people relate to while creating a sense of place for the viewer.

As a person who just happens to be an artist, I am not here to ask the meaning of life but rather answer the question to life by being responsible and proactive in creating. By painting and drawing what I see, I am creating not just what I see but what others, the people who view my art work, who may also be seeing yet not noticing.  Creating art empowers me, and others to access more closely our wants, desires, dreams and hopes through the visual creative arts.

Through the years an evolution in my art is constantly taking place, a visual re-write on my canvas and paper and as the years go by my art brings to me and my audience new insights and new visions to our changing lives and expanding our perspectives together. Being a self-taught artist, and not a skilled technician, I see myself as a medium or channel for the creative energies of the Universe to express its constant evolving.

Randy RD Riccoboni is an insightful, American born artist (California, 1960) influenced by a plethora of sights, sounds, colors, textures and emotion. In all of his artwork, abiding interests in portraiture, landscape, and human psychology have been constant threads.

This self-taught artist acquired his drive and inspiration from encouragement given him by family, friends and public school teachers. Riccoboni's profound love for art and architecture are evidenced in his paintings, landscape and portrait masterpieces; art work that captures the essence of a person's spirit, the love given from animals as well as the beauty and intensity in his land and cityscapes.

We are Equal

New poster art by RD Riccoboni

We are Equal poster with the painting "Dance" by RD Riccoboni.

We are all equal, people, yes we are, no matter what laws created to make anyone otherwise. As artists' it is our duty to invite emotion and inspiration of others through our God given co-creative talents conveyed to us through spirit. Whether positive, humorous, or thought provoking, my work portrays events people relate to while creating a sense of place for the viewer. In this painting, as in everyday life you see the full spectrum of the colors in our world in my palette and on my canvas. This painting represents the celebration of life of all peoples, no matter what, we are all from the same spirit and we are equal.

Color is the first thing you will notice about my work. What makes it "pop" is the placement and texture of color. Placing opposite pigments next to each other fools the eye and gives it definition and mystery. My paint palette, taken from the prismatic colors in the original rainbow flag, which represent sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony, peace and spirit.

D.O.B. The Dykes on Bikes

RD Riccoboni 2007 - 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas

D.O.B.
Dykes on Bikes captures some action packed gal fun. This loud and roaring ongoing lesbian tradition at the beginning of most pride parades. If I didnt paint this experiance I would feel cheated, just the same if there were no Dykes on Bikes in the parades. A big part of our cultuaral identity in the community. To me gay culture does'nt only exist its glaring and beautiful. This scene is from San Diego California along 6th Avenue. I painted this in the in bold colors of the rainbow flags palette at the Pride parade. Once again notice the opposites in color placement and the mix of abstract and realism together.

GO Go Daddy

Our eternal quest for youth in the LGBT community. How about some forty somthing year old Go Go Boys at the pride parade shakin it up? I say if you got it, flaunt it. Seems nobody can have fun dancing and celebrate gay pride like a greased up muscle daddy, even one talking on the cell phone and bound for the 6 o'clock news.

So what am I tring to say here? Look ma, I'm a star dancing at the biggest party in town, Im not so young, but still gorgeous. Or I'll have my people call your people and we'll do lunch. What ever the commentary seems nobody can throw a party like a bunch of queers.

Morning Coffee Bears

RD Riccoboni 2007 16x20 acrylic on canvas

This street-scene, Morning Coffee Bears is to me about gay men, fitting in, and an ongoing search for a mate, trick, or friendship, and being in the right place. A dilemma presents itself here.

Perhaps the best thing in your life could be right in front of your eyes or next to you but you don't see it. Perhaps this relationship or thing is about to happen or is fleeting, as the figure to the left may or may not suggest, or the equality symbol on the middle right edge of the painting appears to indicate. Perhaps we're always looking for a better man to come along. The painting could even be about being together yet separate. They're a couple, they're not a couple, you decide. Surely they're hoping they're in the right place at the right time. Here that place is the cruisey coffee house, which has replaced the gay bar as a hang out in the gay 'hood. The painting's communication of body language, done in broad brushstrokes in dark and light colors, depicts opposite sides of the coin and portrays a lovely yet fickle world out there.

As we go from being a twink to dink, muscle daddy to polar bear, pretty boy to tired queen, is the bear community merely one of our many stops along the way to gay Oz? Are we always trying to fit into a group or sub-culture within another while overlooking who we really are?

Should'da Worn The Pink

RD Riccoboni 30 x 40 acrylic on Canvas 2005

There's a fine line between leather and lace. Here I painted my experience at the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, California. A festival where everyone dons his or her leather and outrageousness. It's all very dark and sexy, in the minds of some, until a woman in a stunning pink suit and pearls boldly makes her statement walking through the crowd. The crowd fixed upon her walk and designer goods totally ignores each other and the drag queen's floor show, as if to say 'I should'da worn the pink.'

Rain-Bears

RD Riccoboni 16 x 21 acrylic on canvas 2006

Friends in the rain, protected from the storm. It's my commentary on being part of a community, yet separate. Where does one fit in within the GLBT community? There seem to be so many special groups within a group. These fellows appear well protected under their umbrella - would there be room for others in their sacred circle? Is the Bear community similar to the art world in this regard?

"...as long as you're an abstract realist with impressionist tendencies."

Rainbow River on 2nd Ave, New York City - Stonewall 25

RD Riccoboni, 1993 36 x 48 Acrylic on canvas

My Tribute to Stonewall 25 and Gay Games Celebrations I traveled to New York City in June 1994 to celebrate and see the unfurling of the mile long rainbow flag and painted - The Rainbow River on Second Avenue. Wanting this to make a statement about Stonewall Riots, Gay America, and the events up till the time of the painting, I placed the New York City police officer standing facing the rainbow flag as it went buy the crowd now in honor. In respect the American flag is placed high above both the large flag and the abstract crowd. Immediately after the presentation of the billowing flag to the cheering crowds, it was cut into small sections, then cleared from the street. This was a moment in time that I wanted to experience and capture in a painting.

Many folks who did not see or witness the parade along with the flag think the painting is an abstract idea, however, this event really took place, witnessed by more than a million people as this boulevard turned into a fluttering rainbow carried a full mile by volunteers. Many folks have come up to me with excitement telling me that they were there that day, expressing to me what the experience was like. Standing behind the scenes at shows where the painting was exhibited I have watched many persons gleefully tell others of that day while pointing at the painting, and say "I was right there". I love when art does that.

In 1996 some of the paintings from this trip appeared in the book Rainbow Nation - Paintings from the gay community. By Aubrey Walter.

Good Cheer

RD Riccoboni 2007 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas

Good Cheer, This is about having fun and not taking it all so seriously. Living life to the fullest, whether a bystander or a participant, the parade is going on. Nothing like a bunch of guys in drag kicking up their heels, donning pom-poms, and big hair doo's to celebrate gay pride. Kind of takes the edge off and brings fun back in to the word gay. I left the background blank and the uniforms bright red for those that cannot handle drag. The scene is sort of like a car bloody wreck, you don't want to look, but you can't help but stare. However, in this circumstance the mayhem is pure gaiety. Who was that lady in Red?
