This lens was created to promote the planting of God-centered evangelical churches throughout the nations. There is an diverse listing of links to other church planting lenses, as well as a collection of resources to explore.
Widely divergent views exist within evangelicalism regarding the subject of "church planting" and how to go about it. Some people advocate a very simple, uncluttered, unstructured approach to planting a new church, beginning with a few families and meeting in homes. Others pursue a "high-yield" or "high impact" strategy, requiring months of preparation before a formal launch designed to attract hundreds of people to the first worship service.

When I was with the IMB doing church planting in Mexico with university students, there were many ideas. Some groups used Avery Willis' book Masterlife and had successes. Most of what was started with my group related to English classes, but didn't go very far.

Church Planter's Toolkit
Here are some important links for church planters
- Bivocational Ministry: The Art of Tentmaking
- Let's face it, funding is always a problem for those involved in planting new churches. A great solution may be to pursue a full-time of part-time career, providing not only income support for your family, but all sorts of other tangible benefits (health care, pension plans, employee discounts, free training, etc) and immersion in a secular marketplace that needs a Christian witness.
- The Chaplaincy Network
- Church planters who need outside employment to support their families should seriously consider a chaplaincy position! There are opportunities in almost every state, indicating a severe shortage of people willing to serve in this sort of marketplace ministry.
- Chaplains in the Workplace
- What a great opportunity to use your theological training and experience in a corporate setting, while earning an income and benefits for your family. A lot of church planters say, "I have no marketable skills? Just a seminary or Bible college degree." Why not investigate the growing need for chaplains in the workplace and plant that church you always dreamed of?
- Church Planter Training
- This page is a work in progress, but feel free to wander around. Send me some links if you know of training events that need to be listed here.
- Church Planting Networks
- The greatest mistake I ever made in trying to plant a new church was working without a team or a network to support me. The entire "church planting vision" you so enthusiastically embrace can quickly turn into "Nightmare on Elm Street" without a net; and you would be safer walking a tightrope with a safety net than planting a church without one.
- Coaching & Mentoring for Church Planters
- Need a coach? An experienced planter willing to coach others?
- Demographics Made Slightly Less Difficult
- Sometimes the word "demographics" strikes fear into the heart, but it doesn't have to be that way. And there are lots of new and helpful places where demographic information can be found. Some are pay-as-you-go, or by subscription, but some sites offer free information. You just have to know where to look.
- Organizing Your Email Clutter
- E-mail is one of the greatest blessings, and at the same time one of the greatest curses, of ministry in the 21st Century! I get more than a dozen serious e-mails per day, from people all over the world, and many of them need varying levels of attention. Some I need to answer today . . . while others can wait a few days. And many of my e-mails build upon previous conversations that have taken place electronically between myself and the other party, with sometimes weeks in between. Perhaps you know the dilemma I am describing.
