Geek is Sexy

It's not uncommon to see members of the Chicago Cycling club "pair up" romantically while riding around the Windy City, says club vice president Kathy Schubert. "The members didn't join the club to meet people; they joined because they enjoy bike riding," she says. "But then they meet someone who shares that love, they talk about it, and things click."

If you're a "geek" about something - whether it's bicycling, cooking or Star Trek - it's not hard to find someone who is interested in your passion or even shares it, say the experts. "Men and women are turned on by people who have passions," says Lori Sutherland, the directrix of the New York City-based Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts. And there are a couple of ways to geek out with a potential match, highlight your interests and draw, not drive away, dates. Here, some pointers:

Hang out in the right circles
For example, cyclists naturally gravitate to the Chicago Cycling Club, Schubert says. Film buffs, meanwhile, may join a local film-appreciation society. Dog-lovers can hook up with each other in a dog obedience class. "Go where your passion is-and where the other people who share your passion are," says Tina B. Tessina, an author of relationship books and a licensed psychotherapist in southern California. In fact, Tessina says you can often find platforms to meet fellow geeks no matter how narrow your interest may be. "If you are a Stargate series fan, go to a convention where there will be other fans," she instructs. "If you are a fitness enthusiast, join a running club. Or if you are a cooking fan, take a culinary arts class that is fairly sophisticated."

Alyson Hannigan, 32

Why she's geeky: She really was a band geek! She played clarinet in junior high school. Played geek icon Willow Rosenberg for eight seasons on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Why she's sexy: She's a fiesty redhead who isn't afraid to try new/difficult roles. She's a spokesperson for breast cancer and is happily married to fellow Buffy alum, Alexis Denisof...he's turbo hot in a totally geek way!

*Alyson, born in Washington DC, began her acting career in Atlanta at the young age of 4 in commercials sponsoring such companies as McDonald's, Six Flags, and Oreos. She is a seasoned television actress veteran, guest starring in "Picket Fences" (1992), "Roseanne" (1988), "Touched by an Angel" (1994) and the "The Torkelsons" (1991) before starring in her most notorious role yet in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997) as Willow Rosenberg.

*Played soccer until she got an injury in her early teens.

*The producers of American Pie (1999) originally wanted her to play the role of Heather, but she wanted to play the role of Michelle because she thought it was funnier.

So recently I was asked to explain what I mean by "Geek is Sexy." It's actually a two part answer. Not sure how well this will answer the question, but here goes:

1) People who are geeks, self-proclaimed or not, are sexy because of their intelligence and sense of humor. They are usually very warm-hearted people who pick up on the more subtle nuances of character because they aren't so wrapped up in the mating game. Plus you will never be bored with a geek: you'll have great conversations from a point of view you've never thought about before, always learn something new, and generally be laughing and having a great time. For example, I got asked one time "if you could go back in time with the knowledge you have now and make an invention to secure your financial future what would it be?" That had me thinking all day.

2) The other part of this is that outer beauty and geekdom are NOT mutually exclusive. There are plenty of very attractive people who consider themselves (or are considered by others) as geeks. Geek does not equal awkward and ugly. Geek is a way of life and a state of mind, not an outward appearance. So you should never assume that a person who looks like a geek is one...and conversely that someone who looks vain and sexy isn't a geek. You might just be very surprised.
