From the lens Genealogy and Family History.

This is very useful information! I've been working on my genealogy for several years, and have hit a few brick walls.
  • dcopps Feb 26, 2012 @ 3:29 pm | delete
Nice job. I'm a Squid newbie and can take several lessons from this.
  • dlcass Feb 25, 2012 @ 5:41 pm | delete
My husband is the genealogist in our family. He has traced his family back to the 1600's. I find the process frustrating, but have had better luck since the internet and especially with sites like Ancestry.com.

Excellent article with a great deal of good advice and valuable information. Prior to my Internet shops and Squidoo, I spent three solid years searching for my genealogy every spare minute. Fortunately, I live in the state capitol so I had access to the state archives where I spent most Saturdays doing research. One day I may drag out the volumes I compiled and try to update them them on new software. The Brother's Keeper softwarse I used back then on old floppy discs is probably unretrievable, but fortunatelyy I kept it all on written records too. Blessed!

Got involved in genealogy about 7 yrs ago and used both online and library resources. So glad the online info is constantly being updated! Not only have I found census records for tons of relatives but as of the last couple of years I've been able to find newspaper articles too. It's a fascinating (and sometimes all-consuming) hobby.

I seem to go in spurts with being interested in Genealogy and need to get more serious and consistent about it.
  • CruiseReady Jan 30, 2012 @ 6:33 am | delete
A cousin has been able to get some family Ellis Island immigration records. That's really cool.

My aunt started researching our families genealogy a couple years ago. She gathered a lot of information that none of us knew. I found out I'm part native american. I found out my great uncle was killed because of a labor union dispute. It's real interesting stuff. Then a couple months ago I was searching through a trunk in my Grans closet and I found the old family bible and it turned out to be a treasure trove. It had newspaper clippings of the early 1900's marriages and deaths in the family. It even had the telegram that was sent when my great great great (great?) gran died. Amazing stuff, really.

wow, some new genealogy tools for me here! I am using Geni Pro which my husband gave us for Christmas and it is an amazing research tool for genealogists.
  • FlaminCatDesigns Jan 15, 2012 @ 8:24 am | delete
You have lots of good resources here and some very good tips.
I love researching my family history and have a blog that I don't update as often as I should. Prior to squidoo I was spending hours every night on research. Now maybe one or two nights a week. It is addicting.
  • tagsforkids Jan 15, 2012 @ 7:41 am | delete
My mother is the family genealogist and has found some amazing history through her research. Since my father's side came from Lancashire, she has corresponded with several kind folks in the UK that have helped her tremendously. I find it fascinating, but don't seem to have the time and dedication she does for it.
  • burntchestnut Jan 15, 2012 @ 7:33 am | delete
I'm not, but my aunt and cousin are. I like to know what they find out, but am more interested in family stories rather than names and dates. I've asked my mother, grandfather and aunts for stories, but regret never getting stories from my dad while he was still alive.
  • poddys Jan 15, 2012 @ 7:28 am | delete
Good information. Debbie and I both met through researching our family histories, and we both use Legacy Family Tree. It's an excellent piece of software, easy to use, and the free version has most of the features that we need. I have a website with my family tree, but it's not advertised and as such gets few visitors. Reminds me that I do need to get my tree updated and I have more research to do. Blessed.
  • ChrisDay May 29, 2011 @ 11:47 pm | delete
We must get going on this!
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 May 19, 2011 @ 8:11 am | delete
I've been able to go back a few hundred years in my family's history. The Internet resources sure have made this so much more possible. Thanks for all of these resources. Nicely done!
  • UKGhostwriter Apr 24, 2011 @ 6:46 am | delete
Like my family history, you can date yours back to named ancestors being founding fathers of America. We've managed to get as far back as the year 910 with some excellent historical characters! One languished in The Tower of London but actually got released!

Not really a keen Genealogist but am interested in finding out more about my Ancestors. Found your suggestion regarding Planting a Genealogy Tree on Google very useful. Thanx a lot.
  • familystorykeeper Mar 12, 2011 @ 11:39 pm | delete
I do think family history is very important. Knowing who our ancestors were and learning about their lives helps us understand ourselves better. Historic events that our ancestors were involved with change our perspective of them. The internet is wonderful as I have found many stories about my ancestors online.
  • nightcats Mar 7, 2011 @ 7:07 pm | delete
I have never done a family history. It would be something worth doing, for sure. Congrats on a very thorough lens.
  • Kimbesa Mar 7, 2011 @ 9:32 am | delete
Thanks for the update! I've lensrolled onto my Civil War lens, where I touched on some family history from that era. I have several Civil War ancestors, that I know of. Someday I'll get back to my research. It's fascinating!
  • ohcaroline Feb 3, 2011 @ 8:28 pm | delete
I have an extensive family tree generated on a program...but it's not online. Other family members have theirs online. It's such a rewarding hobby. It will be your passion if you do it.

I've had to put a hold on my genealogy research because it's so consuming!!! I've managed to get several of my lines back to the 1500's and 1600's. It's so much fun! And the internet makes it a lot easier.

    Thanks for your great lens!
    Lynne

My family did some sort of genealogy study to find our family tree. Come to think of it, we never got the results back. Great work on this lens!

Another great lens from a man who knows his subject.

I see that 12 of the 44 people who have voted above would love a family history website but have no idea where to start.

They can start with the Genealogy Wikia - see http://www.squidoo.com/Genealogy-Wiki - where they can write a short or long page about every relative they know about, link them in several ways (including very easy hyperlinks and categories) to the pages for other family members, and get help from other contributors in linking up with people and sources that have some of the info to fill in the gaps. All free. And anonymous if they are a bit shy.

Squidoo is a wonderful way to display genealogical information. My lens Garner Rix and the Royalton Raid came from the Genealogical research that I have been pursuing for years.

Thank you for the info on new sources of information.
