Researching your ancestors in Liverpool
In the last few hundred years, emigration became more accessible to the lower classes and Liverpool was a major port for people on their outbound adventure. Genealogers from all over the world and especially the Americas and Australia have found they have Liverpool ancestors, but researching them can be difficult especially if you life many miles away, or on another continent!
Most of my tree (that i have found so far) have originated in Liverpool or the surrounding area, so I have compiled some information and links that have been useful to me, in the hope that it will help others find their family.
As well as being the port of choice for those leaving the country, for a lot of those people this was as far as they went - many people may find that their Liverpool ancestors actually came from places like North Wales, Ireland and Scotland, so your own journey may not end in Liverpool either!

Lancashire Online Parish ClerksAll parish registers can be found at the Liverpool Records office located at Liverpool Central Library, however transcripts can be found at the link above. It's not a complete list but it's always being updated and it's a great resource since it sometimes includes information not included on Civil Certificates. Lan-OPC is maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers, and are always looking to increase their ranks.
Lancashire BMD
Here are the LOCAL registers for civil registrations. Registers were collated from around the county, from subdistricts like Prescot and West Derby, and transcribed into one big County-wide register. These county registers were then re-collated to form a national register, effectively being transcribed between two and three times (sometimes more!). Finding the registers that have been transcribed the least will always yeild more accurate data.
Toxteth Park Cemetery Burials
This is a complete list of burials in Toxteth Park Cemetery until the year 2000, all completely searchable. Absolutely invaluable if you know an ancestor died in Liverpool and you're trying to find where they were buried. General Free Links
Free BMD
Similar to those above, these are the national Birth, Marraige and Death indexes, which are free to search and to view images. To see the certificate, you will have to note the reference number on the index and send it to the General Register Office in Soupthport. Certificates cost a small fee but are direct copies of certificates in their posession.
Family Search
You may not already know, but The Church of the Latter Day Saints (The Mormons) hold family history as extremely important, and keep extensive records in a huge vault at their family history centre in Salt Lake City. The Family Search Website allows people to search and view these records for no cost, and they are frequently adding more collections to their catalogue.
Historical Directories
Street Directories were sort of like the Phone Book of their day - most professionals used them (people such as lawyers), and now you can too! This site contains a number of searchable and browsable directories from across the country, but it has a particularly good coverage of the Liverpool area.

- Great lens. I'm in the U.S. but can trace my Great Great Great Grandfather back to the UK. When I have the time, I would like to go further with it.
