Genealogy For Kids: Start Them Early!

We older generation genealogists and family historians wonder constantly how we can interest our children and grandchildren in their ancestral heritage.

In our "instant gratification" world, kids want only what they need to satisfy their "wants" today; well, maybe tomorrow. BUT, the past! Well it's the past and that's usually where our children want to keep it. After all, what's the point in learning about people who are already dead?

Here we will explore how we can get our kids interested in family history and genealogy with references to resources which can be used by parents.

Family History Research - Child Detectives

"An Initial Video To Get You Started"

Family History Research - Child Detectives

Tracing your genealogy and researching your family tree can be an enjoyable activity for your children and you to do together. An easy way to get started with putting together a family tree or other family history project is to begin with what you already know - A blank family information sheet can be downloaded from http://www.genealogyjunction.com/family-information-sheets.htm

The "Interest" Problem

How Do We Create Interest?

Age Appropriate Interest Builders

Creating an interest in kids must be age appropriate. A five to eight year old might be fascinated by a video on the Lion King family with mom or dad explaining with a drawing or pedigree chart showing how the different lion generations are related.

On the other hand a 10-12 year old might be fascinated by the video below showing three generations of the family as they are morphed from one to the other. This is good to show how similar in appearance family members really are.

You will best know what interests your child at different ages since you are sharing all of their daily experiences with them. With the proper resources, you will be able to both encourage and teach them about their family history.

The key is to go at a pace which reflects their growing interest. I will give various books, videos, and internet links below to aid you in acquiring the necessary tools to interest and teach your children

Lion King Family Tree

Younger children will enjoy the Lion King musics and the characters. They may not follow all the "genealogy" behind it, but it should help create a jump off point for approaching the subject.

I'm My Own Grandpa (Country Genealogy 101)

This "classic" country genealogy will be enjoyed by older children. It combines the country song "I'm my own grandpa" with some hilarious cartoon characters. It is one of my favorite videos.

"Mommy, Where did I come from?"

The Question Parents Fear to Hear!

"Mommy, Where Did I Come From?"

When a young child asks where they came from, it is not necessarily a prelude to your discussion with them of the "birds and the bees".

Maybe a simple answer outlining ancestry might get you off the hook the first time. It's always worth a try. At any rate, it gives you an opening to create a little interest early in family history.

What Will I Become, Mommy?

"Create An Instant Interest By A Family "Morphing" Video

This video shows how three generations of a family resemble each other by using morphing technology. Younger children in particular will be fascinated by the process. This will open up a conversation into family resemblances.

Family Tree

Morph sequence starting with grandmother morphing through her kids and grandkids ends with grandfather. Morphs are from parent to child or sibling to sibling. The grandparents have four children and eight grandchildren.

41 Years of Aging

Another video which can show how an individual changes over time is the morphing video below which show 41 years of aging. This can easily create a conversation with a kid after their asking what they will become. The answer might be: "I don't know, but this is how a person changes over time" and show them this video.

41 Years in 60 Seconds (1966 - 2007)

Subject mater not up to much (it's me basically) but the Morphing effect worked out OK. I used dusty old school photographs that I scanned, cropped and resized and a couple of recent digital pics for the last few seconds. The software I used is called 'Fantamorph Pro' which is quite simple to use (I made this within 4 hours of downloading the software) Pete

Genealogy Defined

Genealogy (from Greek: , ', "generation"; and , ', "knowledge") is the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. Genealogists use oral traditions, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about a family and to demonstrate kinship and pedigrees of its members. The results are often displayed in charts or written as narratives.

Some scholars differentiate between genealogy and family history, limiting genealogy to an account of kinship, while using "family history" to denote the provision of additional details about lives and historical context.

I've been working on a family tree for my kids and grandkids ... this is a great lens to get kids interested in their roots. I love the child's hand drawn family tree picture, and the photo morph video. Congrats on your well-deserved purple star.

This is a really fantastic resource for getting kids interested in what can seem at times a very dry subject! I especially like the idea about parents getting their kids interested in the Lion King Family History.

Well done on a brilliant lens!

    Take care

Really nice lens, I have been involved with our Local Heritage Centre for many years and we have always believed in promoting the past and our heritage to the kids, so it makes sense to do the same with Family History. Gonna recommend this lens.

Awesome lens! The earlier you start kids to be interested in genealogy, the more chance there is of the family history being preserved for future generations. Great job!
