Going on a Genealogy Vacation

There's nothing like going on a genealogy vacation. It's several days of doing what you enjoy most - digging up your roots, visiting old family homes, and maybe even making or renewing friendships with distant relatives.

Combining a summer vacation with a genealogy research trip can be rewarding and fun for you and your family.

Pack for Success
1. copies of your research goals and to-do lists
2. copies of your pedigree charts and family group records
3. plenty of pencils (many record repositories do not allow the use of pens)
4. blank charts and forms, including pedigree charts, family group sheets, research logs and forms for abstracting or extracting records (such as blank census forms)
5. a laptop computer if you have one (check with the individual repositories to be sure their allowed)
6. a magnifying glass to help in reading old records
7. comfortable clothes and shoes (you may spend a lot of your research time standing at counters or squatting in old, dusty basements). Stick with business casual over sweats or jeans, for better service.
8. camera, batteries and plenty of film (or memory cards if your camera is digital)
9. a tape recorder

Visiting the land where your ancestors lived can be an extremely exciting and rewarding experience. Walking the land and visiting the cemeteries in Sweden where my ancestors lived brought me closer to them than a piece of paper could ever do.

Kids will have Fun on their own Genealogical Treasure Hunt!

How to help your children or grandchildren on a journey that will last a lifetime.

The genealogical treasure hunt is a search for something more precious than gold or jewels -- information that reveals something about your family. All children like to play detective - to look for clues and sift through information for answers.
Genealogy is a wonderful hobby for all age groups, including children, and provides an opportunity to:

1.develop a stronger sense of family
2.bridge the gap between generations
3.share special time with your loved ones
4.make history come alive
5.encourage organizational, planning, communication, logic, problem-6.solving, and presentation skills
7.create an opportunity for lifelong learning

Children can have so much fun playing detective, that they won't even realize that they are learning along the way.
Ask your grandchildren to help you unravel the mystery of your family history, and you will be starting them on the journey of a lifetime.

One of my grandmother's sisters did a massive family history search back in the 1970s after converting to Mormonism. I now have a copy of that history plus a lot of things I have added from my father's side of the family.

I was able to write the lens on my great-great grandmother because of that history research.

Studying Family History is lots of fun. I studied my US Family History for 8 long years & I have learned so much & met many nice descendants. I had to put it aside because my immediate family is not interested. Now I Squidoo! :)

This is wonderful! I love doing the research and finding a gem. I love to get the charcoals and of course pictures of the old headstones and keep them together with the info of each ancestor. You may have just made it easier for me to get my son involved and not have him roll his eyes when I start talking abut his rich heritage.

    Good work!
Four of my first six lenses have been about genealogy. First one got a lensrank in the top 5,000 in a few days. I spend a lot of time helping to build up the free Genealogy Wikia, so I'm pleased to see lenses such as yours that encourage people to take an interest.
