Meet the Latest Cartoon Hero

Stretch your imagination a bit. 5 years ago, a massive explosion released nanites into the atmosphere. These infected every living thing on earth, including humans. At random moments, these nanites will activate inside their host, turning into a hideous monster known as an E.V.O. (Exponentially Variegated Organism). These monsters mindlessly attack anything around them.

In an effort to combat this threat, a new organization was formed, Providence. Their main weapon is a 15 year old boy.

On 23 April 2010 a new action hero hit our TV screens. He is a typical 15 year old boy who likes fast cars, is a bit awkward with women, and is trying to figure out his identity in a strange and unknown world.

The program is Generator Rex.

Meet Rex.

Super Hero

Like everyone else on the planet, Rex was infected with the nanites. Unlike everyone else, Rex can control the nanites within his body. With this control he can use the nanites to create special machines out of his own body. He can also communicate with other machines and with the nanites in other people. He uses this power to deactivate the nanites and remove them from their host.

Rex's control over his nanites and these powers is very much linked to his emotional state and can weaken when he is dealing with a low self-esteem, anger, or inner conflicts. All very frequent occurrences in a 15 year old boy. Rex is also a bit of a rebel and in an effort to exert his independence he has been known to break out of the compound where he lives to go on road trips with, or without, his trusty sidekick, a talking chimp named Bobo Haha.

Rex's Early Years

We learn more about Rex in Generator Rex episode 19, series 1.

When Providence is initially set up, EVOs are captured and subsequently disassembled for examination at the molecular level in an effort to study and better control the nanite threat. The person assisting with this project is Dr Holiday, who five years later has become lead scientist at Providence.

Agent Six and the future head of Providence, White Knight, are sent to Mexico where a bio-mechanical EVO is on the loose. After fighting, a much battered and bruised EVO collapses to reveal 10 year old Rex inside. White Knight wants to bring Rex back for disassembling but Six, Bobo, and Dr Holiday are able to rescue Rex.

During the fight, Rex destroys the machine used to disassemble EVOs and in the process purges all the nanites from White Knight's body.

Young Rex has complete amnesia with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is able to control the nanites. With help from his friends at Providence he learns how to better use the nanites within his body to create better machines. Much of Rex's inner conflict comes from trying to figure out who he is and what happened to him in his younger days before Providence.
