Genital Herpes Information

Genital Herpes is one of the outcomes of the herpes simplex virus (HSV) while the other is oral herpes. The distinction is pretty self evident, one occurs near the oral regions of the body (mouth, lips) while the other occurs in the genital region (penis, vagina). The oral herpes is caused by the type 1 (HSV-1) strain of the virus while the genital herpes is caused by the type 2 (HSV -2) strain. Genital herpes is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) both in United States, Canada, and the rest of the world. Approximately 100 million people in the United States are infected with the HSV-1 virus while nearly 40 Million people are infected with the HSV-2 virus, and the numbers are growing every year.

Over the years, people have developed an attitude that genital herpes is "bad" while oral herpes is "good". However the reality is that both strains of the virus share over 50% DNA and are essentially the same making neither better nor worse than the other. And oral herpes can be contracted by physical or sexual contact and vise-versa. So what makes them different? The distinction between the two is their place of residence. The oral herpes (coldsores)virus tends to reside on nerve endings close to the ear, while the genital herpes resides on the lower part of the spine close to the genitals; hence the area of the body affected.

It is interesting to note that most people who contract the virus have virtually no symptoms at all or the symptoms are so mild that one does not even realize they are infected. Those who did experience the symptoms have reported having: headache, muscle aches, fever, pain during urination and abnormal discharge. When the virus outbreak occurs for the first time the visual evidence can be seen in the form of painful large blisters on the penis or around the opening of the vagina know as vulva. Once these itchy blisters break open they turn into oozing shallow sores which can take up to anywhere from 3-4 weeks to heal. However the healing process for subsequent times the genital herpes virus occurs is much faster. Once the sores and blisters have healed completely, the virus sits dormant under the skin in the infected area, sometime for months, and once again becomes active to external factors such as stress, sunlight, or other conditions such as flu.

Risk of Contracting the Virus

STD: genital herpes transmission

There are several factors, which can increase your likely hood of contracting the genital herpes virus. First if you are actively having unprotected sex with a high-risk partner, meaning your sexual partner also has other partners. Second, if you are having sex with multiple partners yourself or unprotected sex (not using condoms). Third, having a weak immune system, which can interfere with the body's natural ability to defend itself against virus attacks. Fourth, your sex plays a role as well. Women are much more likely to get genital herpes infection than men and the impact is likely to be more severe causing greater complications.

Prevention Methods

You know the old adage "prevention is worth a pound of cure" and it certainly is true when it comes to genital herpes infection. Following is a list of some common sense method to prevent becoming infected with herpes.
  • Before you engage in a sexual act with someone find out a bit about him or her. Talk to them about STD's; keep in mind that it is possible for one to be infected and not even know it or show any symptoms.
  • Be responsible, if you have symptoms or actually have HSV do not engage in physical or sexual contact with others and vise-versa.
  • Do not engage in sex with more than one partner. Having multiple sex partners greatly increases you chances of contracting genital herpes virus (type 2) or oral herpes virus (type 1)
  • Practice safe sex; always use a condom. Don't let your self become part of another statistic like millions of others worldwide.
