Genital Herpes - it's not the end of your sex life...

genital herpesHave you contracted herpes?

Genital herpes and oral herpes are normally two separate types of herpes. Both the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 can affect the genitalia but generally it is Herpes Simplex Virus 2 that is responsible for causing genital herpes.

The lack of information about herpes is what accounts for the rapid spread of this virus amongst people all over the world.

There is no real lack of herpes information, many people are simply afraid to admit that they have herpes and will not easily visit their local doctor to discuss herpes treatment options.

What most people don't know is that genital herpes is a very common condition. It's just that some people do not show any symptoms that is why they don't know that they have the virus while others are so badly affected by it they spend their lives searching for a herpes cure.

We must remember that a cold sore is a very common type of herpes and even if it is caused by the type 1 virus, it can also be transmittedto the genitals via oral sex.

Prevelance of Genital Herpes

How many of us have genital herpes?

Nationwide, at least 45 million people ages 12 and older, or one out of five adolescents and adults, have had genital HSV infection. Between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, the number of Americans with genital herpes infection increased 30 percent.

Genital HSV-2 infection is more common in women (approximately one out of four women) than in men (almost one out of five). This may be due to male-to-female transmissions being more likely than female-to-male transmission.

Genital Herpes Prevention

The surest way to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including genital herpes, is to abstain from sexual contact, or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected.

Genital ulcer diseases can occur in both male and female genital areas that are covered or protected by a latex condom, as well as in areas that are not covered. Correct and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of genital herpes only when the infected area or site of potential exposure is protected. Since a condom may not cover all infected areas, even correct and consistent use of latex condoms cannot guarantee protection from genital herpes.

Persons with herpes should abstain from sexual activity with uninfected partners when lesions or other symptoms of herpes are present. It is important to know that even if a person does not have any symptoms he or she can still infect sex partners. Sex partners of infected persons should be advised that they may become infected. Sex partners can seek testing to determine if they are infected with HSV. A positive HSV-2 blood test most likely indicates a genital herpes infection.

Genital Herpes Treatment and Prevention

genital herpes treatmentFor genital herpes, condoms are a highly recommended way to limit transmission of herpes simplex infection, as demonstrated in research. However, condoms are by no means completely effective.

The effectiveness of this method is somewhat limited on a public health scale by the limited use of condoms in the community and on an individual scale because some blisters may not be covered by the condom, or free virus in female vaginal fluid may enable infection around the base of the penis or testicles not covered by the condom.

Condoms do not prevent the condom wearer from spreading the infection to new sites either on himself through abrasion (if he is already infected and suffering an outbreak), or on his partner if they are suffering from an outbreak and the sexual activity spreads this infection from one site to another on their own body.
