The Manuka Bush or Tea Trea

Leptospermum Scoparium

Manuka honey is made by bees who gather nectar from the Manuka bush. This evergreen plant is unique to New Zealand and grows up to 15 meters in height.

The Maori people have used its bark, sap oil and leaves as a folk medicine for centuries. They knew its medicinal benefits could be used for treating flu, fevers, colds, skin and stomach ailments.

When Captain James Cook discovered New Zealand the settlers gave it the name Tea tree because they used the prickly leaves to make tea and beer from it.

Captain Cook wrote in his Endeavour Journal :

"the leaves were used by many of us as a tea which has a very agreeable bitter taste and flavor when they are recent but loses some of both when they are dried. When the infusion was made strong it proved emetic (induces vomiting) to some in the same manner as 'green tree' ".

Apart from ingesting the bark and leaves of the Manuka bush, New Zealand Kakariki parakeets chew on it and apply it to their feathers. This way they prevent and get rid of parasites.

Honey, a Natural Remedy Throughout History

Did you know...

Honey has has been used for its medicinal purposes for 4000 years. It even seems mankind has been collecting the golden nectar for 10,000 years.

The ancient Egyptians already knew in 1550 BC of the anti-bacterial properties of honey. They believed it to be nectar from the Gods.

Honey has also been mentioned in the 21st Century B.C. in Babylonian and Sumerian Cuneiform writings.

In Ancient Rome when Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius reigned, honey was used as a substitute for gold to pay taxes.

Aristotle (384 - 322 BC) discussed the differences in honeys, referring to pale honey as 'being good as a salve for sore eyes and wounds'. And of course the Bible refers to the Promised Land as "the land of milk and honey". (Exodus 3:8)

Manuka Honey, a Special Type of Honey

Discovery of the Unique Manuka Factor

Professor Peter Molan - Manuka honey expert In 1981 Dr. Peter Molan, Senior Lecturer at the Biochemistry Department, Waikato University New Zealand, discovered that certain types of Manuka honey contained much higher antibacterial activity levels than regular honey.

Not knowing which substance is responsible for this unique type of activity he named it the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).

"In Manuka honey, and its close relative which grows in Australia called Jellybush, there's something else besides the hydrogen peroxide*. And there's nothing like that ever been found anywhere else in the world."

*All honeys contain an enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide which is a proven antiseptic with antibacterial properties.

Active Manuka honey differs from normal honey because of the additional existence of non-peroxide antibacterial activity (The Unique Manuka Factor).

The enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide (a natural antibacterial agent) in honey is destroyed when honey is exposed to heat or light. The non-peroxide antibacterial activity in Manuka honey however, is stable so there is no concern about losing its healing properties in storage.

anti septic

Digestive Use of Manuka Honey

what does science say about manuka honey and stomach ulcers

Honey has been used as a (folklore) medicine for digestive complaints for centuries. Also recent studies have shown (manuka) honey to offer relief from gastrointestinal complaints such as upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, and other forms of dyspepsia. However whether or not manuka honey is able to cure stomach ulcers remains disputed. For more on this read this post titled; Does manuka honey cure stomach ulcers?.

Manuka Honey Sore Throat Remedy

why is Manuka honey such a good cure for a sore throat?

A sore throat (pharyngitis) is an inflammation of the throat. According to Wikipedia:

"Most acute cases are caused by viral infections (40%-60%), with the remainder caused by bacterial infections, fungal infections, or irritants such as pollutants or chemical substances. Treatment of viral causes are mainly symptomatic while bacterial or fungal causes may be amenable to antibiotics and anti-fungals respectively."

The fact that Manuka honey is proven to have an inflammatory, anti viral, anti bacterial and anti fungal action should say enough why this is such an effective natural remedy for an annoying sore throat.

The best Manuka honey for a sore throat would be one with an UMF rating of 10 to 18 (or a MGO honey with compared strength.) as these ratings are recommended for most therapeutic uses.

How Does Manuka Honey Work?

In wound care:

When applied to a wound Manuka honey provides a moist healing barrier. This barrier prevents the cross-infection of the wound. The hydrogen peroxide present in all honeys fights of bacteria.

Honey is known to work as an anti-inflammatory agent and lifts dirt from the wound. It also stimulates the growth of new blood capillaries, white blood cells and supplies nutrients that boost the regeneration of new skin. The wound heals faster, less crusting and thus less scarring occurs.

Unlike antibiotics which are becoming useless more and more while an increasing amount of bacteria gets resistant, honey has no side effects.

"In more than 500 published reports on the clinical usage of honey in open wounds there have been no adverse reactions noted other than a localized stinging sensation described by some patients."

Wonderful Manuka Honey Testimonial

a real life experience with this honey's healing powers

Mr. Tom Lloyd was diagnosed with a fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus yeast in his calf. Columns of dead tissue extending from Lloyd's right ankle to his knee harbored bacteria and prevented the leg from healing.

Doctor Maria Epstein feared that Lloyd's leg would not heal properly if the tissue would be removed surgically and leg amputation would be necessary.

"No one thought he was going to keep his leg," Epstein said. Lloyd's wife Sally called the situation "very scary". In January 2009, Dr. Epstein's team began applying a dressing made of sterilized, active Manuka honey. The honey softened the tissue, allowing for easier removal.

The honey's antibacterial properties also helped fend off the infection. A month after applying the product, doctors report the being "as good as new".

Natural Wound Care & Digestive Treatment

The pertinent facts on Manuka Honey according to Dr Molan:

  • Approximately 50 reports in medical journals detail the effectiveness of honey as a wound dressing and as therapy for eye infections and diarrhea.

  • Benefits the maintenance of a healthy digestion.

  • Active Manuka honey is the only honey available for sale that is tested for its antibacterial activity.

  • The high amounts of the active ingredient found in Manuka honey have not yet been found in any other food.

Manuka Active UMF

Two Types of Manuka Honey

There are two types of Manuka honey:

  • Ordinary Manuka Honey: contains hydrogen peroxide antibacterial properties like all other honeys.
  • UMF Manuka Honey: contains hydrogen peroxide plus its own natural Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) antibacterial properties. This unique, additional activity gives it the special antibacterial healing potency.

UMF® = Unique Manuka Factor

the UMF rating system

UMF Rating
UMF® is the registered trademark of the Active Manuka Honey Association (AMHA). The UMF rating is the number on the label. The higher the number, the greater the UMF test result and corresponding antimicrobial, therapeutic and healing qualities.

The minimum qualification for using the name UMF® and to be suitable for therapeutic use is a UMF® 10 rating.

There are 4 UMF ratings to indicate the antibacterial potency of Manuka honey:

  • UMF0 to UMF4 - not detectable

  • UMF5 to UMF9 - maintenance level only (not recommended for therapeutic uses)

  • UMF10 to UMF15 - useful therapeutic levels endorsed by the Honey Research Unit at University of Waikato

  • UMF16+ - superior strength with very high antibacterial levels

The minimum qualification for using the name UMF® and to be suitable for treating infections is a UMF® 10 rating

Testing Manuka Honey for its Activity

New Zealand Laboratory Services tests each batch of UMF Manuka honey independently in order to ensure its UMF activity levels are accurate.

NZ Labs is the only laboratory in New Zealand appointed to test Manuka honey for antibacterial activity using criteria laid down by the Waikato Honey Research Unit .

When to use Manuka honey

Internal and external use of Manuka honey

UMF Manuka honey in jars can be used for digestive purposes. For external use Manuka honey has to be sterilized.

Active Manuka honey can be used at home as a gentle antiseptic for treating minor injuries like cuts or burns. Or as a digestive nutritional addition for stomach relief or energy renewal.

Although I use Manuka honey myself on minor cuts and burns (it really works great!) it is recommended to use medical grade Manuka honey for external use. Medical grade Manuka honey is sterilized by gamma irradiation and has undergone a greater level of filtration, compared to jars aimed at internal use.

Manuka Honey Wound Care

dedicated sterilized FDA approved Manuka honey wound care products

Honey has been used in wound care for thousands of years. Honey is a natural antiseptic, speeds healing, hydrates the surrounding skin and protects wounds from infections as well as cures infections. Another benefit is that honey prevents bandages from sticking.

Honey was widely used in medical treatment through the First World War.

Nowadays the Medihoney brand (Comvita) offers a wide range of wound care products based on sterilized active UMF Manuka honey.

The Best Way to Take Manuka Honey

in case of a sore throat or other complaints

When you take Manuka honey for internal purposes like the relief of stomach ailments or acid reflux it is best to take it in the morning when your stomach is still empty e.g. with a cracker a piece of bread or something alike. Do not drink for a while after to keep the honey as concentrated as possible. This is a tip on how to use Manuka honey suggested by Dr. Molan. It is commonly recommended to take the honey this way three times a day.

In case of a sore throat I always take a teaspoon with the honey and take small 'bites' of it over a period of like 10 minutes or so. This way the honey gets in touch with the throat longer. You can also dissolve the honey in cooled down, boiled water ( to sterilize the water) and gargle with it.

I used to gargle with cooked water with a lot of salt in it and it really prevented a starting sore throat from developing but I have noticed that nibbling Manuka honey of a teaspoon works even better and is a lot more pleasant.

What exactly is this non-peroxide antibacterial activity?

Dr Molan found out about the healing qualities of Manuka honey but nobody exactly knew what chemical process was responsible for the extraordinary treats.

Until 2006 when Professor Thomas Henle, Head of Food Chemistry, University of Dresden, Germany announced the discovery of methylglyoxal (MGO).

"We unambiguously demonstrated for the first time that methylglyoxal is directly responsible for the anti-bacterial activity of Manuka honey"

From the Waikato Honey Research Website: It is now known that this unique antibacterial activity is due to the combined action of methylglyoxal (MGO) and an unidentified synergistic component(s). Although very low levels of MGO are found in most honey, the high level of MGO in manuka honey is unique, as is the presence of the synergist which more than doubles the antibacterial activity of MGO.

The MGO rating system

MGO®= Methyglyoxal

The MGO system was developed after Dr. Henle discovered the existence of Methylgyoxal. Manuka honey with an UMF rating of 10 can be compared with MGO 100 Manuka honey.

UMF® 10 = MGO 100.
UMF® 16 = MGO 250
UMF® 20 = MGO 400

UMF versus MGO

UMF is a better rating system than MGO

Unique Manuka Factor (UMF®) and methylglyoxal (MGO®) are both activity rating systems.

Although the UMF and MGO rating system both indicate the presence of antibacterial activity none of the systems is ideal but UMF seems to be a better indication of the antibacterial activity in honey.
Until a better rating system is developed the UMF rating system is more valuable in recognizing active Manuka honey

Professor Molan says this about the MGO rating system:

"Because the level of MGO is an unreliable indication of the level of antibacterial activity and can be very misleading, I can see no advantage for it to be used to indicate antibacterial activity other than if someone wanted to fool the consumer into thinking that the higher levels of MGO are giving them a level of antibacterial activity that is far higher than they are really getting."

This year a new standard, developed by Dr. Peter Molan, is due to appear. This new university-certified standard will improve the ways of determining the rating of activity of Manuka honey.

One of my own experiences

how a nasty cut in my finger healed differently than normal

Recently I had gotten a new set of kitchen knifes for my birthday. Of course it was only a matter of time before I would cut myself, not being used to handling these very sharp knifes. It was a nasty cut, because I had almost sliced a little part of my finger. Now normally you'll hope the loose end of skin will grow back but it never does.

This time however I applied Manuka honey (just from a jar, I know its not recommended) twice or three times a day on my finger and kept it covered with a wound plaster. To my surprise I noticed the wound healed quickly and the loose part of skin grew back on too my finger!

A few weeks later you can still see the part that would normally been rejected is lighter than the rest of the skin but it really has grown together again.

Burn Treatment

David Crosby, a retired insurance claims examiner from Hanover, Massachusetts, began using Medihoney two months ago on a 2 1/2-year-old burn on his leg after high-tech treatments did not help. The burn's size has shrunk by half and it continues to heal.. "At this stage, any improvement's better than nothing," Crosby said.

Reliefs Abdominal Pain Attacks

Manuka honey appears to abate my severe abdominal pain attacks that my gastroenterologist, so far, has not been able to diagnose. It feels like it is my gall bladder but two ultrasounds haven't found anything definitive. I only get attacks a couple times a year so this has been tough to figure out. I'm thankful that the Manuka honey (unlike everything else I've tried) keeps the attacks mild in pain. Before Manuka honey, the pain was incredible--like I was being stabbed with a knife.

Ulcer Treatment

According to a nurse practitioner at Georgetown University Hospital's Center for Wound Healing in Washington: "One patient who had an diabetics' feet ulcer that didn't heal for a few years, healed 90 percent in three weeks, while the usual rate for chronic wounds is barely 10 percent a week." *

* Note: Dr. Robert Frykberg, chief of podiatry at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Phoenix, said the Manuka honey based Medihoney product has worked on about half the patients with diabetic foot ulcers who have used it.
Important!

A critical note: quote by professor Molan:

"There's more evidence, clinical evidence, by far for honey in wound treatment than for any of the pharmaceutical products" for infection.

However, it won't work once an infection gets in the blood. "It's not a miracle."

Frequently Asked Manuka honey questions.

Have a question to add to the FAQ? Put it in the comment section below..

  • Q: My wound is not healing as it should and I don't know how to get the dressing off without it tearing and reopening the wound. I have diabetes. Can Manuka honey help with healing my wound?
  • A: Yes, honey is a great solution for wounds that are not healing. Dr. Molan has published a paper in Advances in Skin & Wound Care, arguing that honey is particularly useful for diabetic foot ulcers. He cites several clinical trials and hundreds of case reports in which honey appeared to be more effective than conventional treatments. Another benefit is that the dressings do not stick to the wound. This prevents the wound from reopening and you from extra pain.

  • Q: Does Manuka honey have side effects?
  • A: No, apart from a slightly stinging feeling reported by patients when applied on wounds (supposedly because of the acidity of the honey) Manuka honey has not shown to have side effects. Never since the research has started in 1982

  • Q:Little children should not eat honey because of the risk of bacteria causing botulism that might be present in honey. How about using honey on children's and infants burns or scrapes?
A: According to experts this is okay. "honey sometimes contains the spores of bacteria that cause botulism, ....there have been no reported cases of this bacteria or anything else in honey infecting a wound."

  • Q:If there are no cases of this bacteria in honey infecting a wound why should we buy sterilized honey? A:These honeys, such as Medihoney and UMF honeys also provide the advantage of being tested in laboratories for their activity.

Manuka Honey Shampoo

Nexxus Theratin Extreme Moisture Shampoo

I am a skeptical person who is aware of the fact that most products are being hyped by marketeers and their benefits are mostly fictional. I also do think it is best to use products with natural ingredients. (If they are effective because they aren't always) This because it seems science still does not know which effects all the synthetic components of cosmetic products have on our body.

Now personally I use a normal shampoo from the grocery but a friend of mine told me about this shampoo she uses. She complained her hair sometimes is dry and listless. But this shampoo with moisturizing Manuka honey seems to work well for her. She told me I should mention it here.
