Until 2006 when Professor Thomas Henle, Head of Food Chemistry, University of Dresden, Germany announced the discovery of methylglyoxal (MGO).

Although the UMF and MGO rating system both indicate the presence of antibacterial activity none of the systems is ideal but UMF seems to be a better indication of the antibacterial activity in honey.

• Q: My wound is not healing as it should and I don't know how to get the dressing off without it tearing and reopening the wound. I have diabetes. Can Manuka honey help with healing my wound?
• A: Yes, honey is a great solution for wounds that are not healing. Dr. Molan has published a paper in Advances in Skin & Wound Care, arguing that honey is particularly useful for diabetic foot ulcers. He cites several clinical trials and hundreds of case reports in which honey appeared to be more effective than conventional treatments. Another benefit is that the dressings do not stick to the wound. This prevents the wound from reopening and you from extra pain.



• Q: Does Manuka honey have side effects?
• A: No, apart from a slightly stinging feeling reported by patients when applied on wounds (supposedly because of the acidity of the honey) Manuka honey has not shown to have side effects. Never since the research has started in 1982



• Q:Little children should not eat honey because of the risk of bacteria causing botulism that might be present in honey. How about using honey on children's and infants burns or scrapes?
  A: According to experts this is okay. "honey sometimes contains the spores of bacteria that cause botulism, ....there have been no reported cases of this bacteria or anything else in honey infecting a wound."
