What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is great fun! If you are new to geocaching and are curious as to what it is, it is kind of like treasure hunting with a GPS unit. Geocachers will place a "cache" somewhere in the world and then supply GPS coordinates for fellow geocachers to locate the cache with their GPS unit. A cache can contain just about anything, but it will usually consist of at least a logbook in some kind of waterproof container, (like Tupperware) so that different visitors can leave a comment when they find it. Some geocachers will leave a little prize for people to find, and some will replace that prize with something different. You never know what you might find!

Complex Caches

Geocachers congregate in communities on the internet and share their finds and post new caches they have hidden. It is almost certain that you can find several caches in your area to hunt for at any given time. Not all caches are found at the first coordinates given...you may arrive at the first set of coordinates to find a clue to a new set of coordinates that may contain the cache or another clue. Now you are really on a treasure hunt!

The Garmin Geocaching GPS Unit

To start geocaching, the first thing you are going to need is a GPS unit. Handheld units are the best for this, because you may find yourself on a hike to find the booty! There are lots of geocaching GPS units, but when researching a unit, one of the main things you want to consider is accuracy. You don't want to be in the middle of the woods and have your GPS telling you that you are within a 500' radius of the cache. You could be searching all day for it! I would recommend a Garmin geocaching gps unit.

The Garmin Colorado 400t Has A Geocaching Mode

I'm sure by now you have heard of Garmin and I think they make the best geocaching GPS units. An excellent GPS unit is the Garmin Colorado 400t. It is jam-packed with features including a Geocaching Mode. With the Geocaching Mode, you can get the cache information including the last few logs, the hint, terrain, and difficulty automatically loaded into your Garmin Colorado. The geocaches are stored separately from your waypoints so it doesn't clutter up your waypoint information.

You can also send or receive a waypoint or wirelessly track in the field between two Garmin Colorados if you are caching with friends or meet new friends on a hunt.

You can pick up a Garmin Colorado 400t for a good price here.
