My husband and I have started a new adventure that many are already enjoying, geocaching. We're so new that I'm sure there's all kinds of terms used that we don't know about, so bear with me as I take you with us on our journey...don't laugh to hard if I use the wrong terms...well then again, if I give you a laugh and make you smile, that's okay:-)

We already love the outdoors, love discovering new places, and like walking trails, though we don't do it nearly as much as we used to...so this hobby seems like the perfect fit for us.

So far, I've been gathering information from geocaching.com, we joined for free to start out...our id is "pcnjbboomer". We decided that $10 was a small price to pay to try the premium membership for a few months. There is also a local group in our part of the State that I plan to join.

We have a GPS unit, but it's the kind that just takes you along streets, it doesn't accept GPS coordinates, so we're going to have to purchase a new one. This weekend we will do some shopping. (We did purchase one, you'll see updated info below).

This seems like it's going to be great fun, an inexpensive hobby, and one that will get us a bit of exercise and out in the great and beautiful outdoors!

The picture is of our first-ever find, it was raining, but fun and beautiful walking along trails among the trees anyway. The pic should be dated 6/13 instead of 6/12.

What is Geocaching?

According to geocaching.com, "Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache."

CURRENT UPDATES Updated 8/14/09

I'll share any new info here

8/14/09 - Time has flown and we had a couple medical bumps in the road in the family, but hubby is recovering nicely, and we will be back out on the trails in a week I hope...I'm especially looking forward to the fall!

6/21/09 - What a nice Father's Day we had! My daughter had us all over for dinner and we went out as a family to a couple of caches I saved in the GPS in her area. One was quite a beautiful hike through the woods to a Fire Tower.

6/13/09 - We went out after the barbecue and found 3 caches, officially starting our new adventure. Lots of fun, even though it was raining. You can find us on geocaching.com, user pcnjbabyboomer - that will probably be it until next weekend.

6/12/09 - My GPS came a few days ago, and I've been spending time getting acquainted. I've uploaded some local caches from geocaching.com and have been trying to figure out the features...I think a lot of things will come clear when we get out and start using it. As circumstances would have it, we have a busy Sunday, and a lunch/barbecue to attend tomorrow. SO, think tonight I'm going to search for some caches near the location of the barbecue and get started after we eat. I'll let you know how we make out. Have a great weekend!

How do I find Caches?

Just to give you an idea of how easy it is to find caches using geocache.com, here are the steps that they suggest on their home page:

1. Register for a free membership.
2. Click "Hide & Seek a Cache."
3. Enter your postal code and click "search."
4. Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name.
5. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device.
6. Use your GPS device to assist you in finding the hidden geocache.
7. Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.
8. Share your geocaching stories and photos online.

When you join the site and find a cache that you are interested in tracking down from the long list that comes up when you enter your zip code, from the site you can send the coordinates to your GPS or phone. There's a map with the general location pinpointed, level of difficulty as far as how difficult a hike it will be and how long, and much more.

You also have your own "presence" at the site where you can record your adventures, and with other helpful information.

You may also have a local group that you can join, do a google search on the internet entering "geocaching" and your town, zip, or general location.

Some Thoughts on GPS Units

From what I've read, you don't need an expensive GPS unit to go geocaching, you do need one that accepts GPS coordinates, doesn't display street routes only. When you shop, here or elsewhere on the web, look carefully at the units. Some have maps, some do not. Once nice thing about Amazon is that you'll find many reviews of the units, and will learn a lot about them by reading what other customers have to say.

Shopped for a GPS Today

It's Saturday, June 6th and we shopped for a GPS in the stores, but I didn't see the one that I wanted, so we ended up coming home and ordering this Etrex Venture HC online today. I chose this one because the price was good, less than you're seeing, it was selling for about $120ish as you should see when you click on it, and actually put it in your shopping cart. I also chose this one because I know someone using it, and It has good reviews. I was tempted by one twice as much that had more features, and may one day wish I had purchased it, but know that this one will be quite enough. .

Why Choose Geocaching as a Hobby?

Hobbies can be expensive. Hubby and I have talked about a few different ideas of things we can do now that the children are grown. This hobby is not only inexpensive, it's good exercise, something we as boomers need and tend to slack on. It gets you away from the TV and computer, enjoying the great outdoors.

I haven't done enough research to find out whether there are caches in cities, but if you are a city dweller, this is a great way to get out into the country.

Geocaching on eBay

Ebay is one of my favorite places to shop and sell, so it's a natural to save some things here on my lens from eBay for future reference.

Father's Day Geocaching 6/21/09

Here's a shot my son took from the area near one of the caches we found on Father's Day, he set up the camera and did a great job of getting to his spot in the 10 second time frame he allowed for the automatic shot.

Dress for your Geocaching Adventure

Here's a few tops for spring, summer and fall Geocaching. Oh, and bumper stickers to dress up your car.

in reply to EagleScoutMom Hi there, thanks so much! As for bushwacking and finding caches in cleaner spots, I'm somewhere in between:-) I love trails in the woods, and don't mind getting of a trail a bit, and their are loads of caches in places like that. AND for those who like "cleaner caching", we've found a few in parking lots and along sidewalks. Thanks for the lensroll...I'll stop by.

Yay ! Geocaching is so much fun ! We started about a year ago and have gone out about 5 or 6 times to search for that unknown treasure! It's so exciting when you find it. Thrashing thru the woods is my husband's idea of fun (me ... not so much!) I like the cache's that are in more of a clearing or easier to get to. He's like Indiana Jones - all he needs is a machete to blaze the trails ! LOL ! I will lensroll your boomer lens with mine about boomers on beach cruiser bikes ! 5 stars ! http://www.squidoo.com/cruiserbeachbikes

in reply to paperfacets Thank you for stopping by, yes, if GPS's had been available when our children were young, we would have had lots of family fun...but they enjoyed coming with us as adults, too, for Father's Day as you can see in the pic...glad my "kids" still like having fun with Mom and Dad now and then :-)

A treasure hunt! I have seen this somewhere. TV or the newspaper. It certainly is a good way to get out and have some exercise. Would be great fun for kids, as well. Good info and lens.
