The Start of Something Fun

My husband and I have started a new adventure this past spring and summer of 2009 that many are already enjoying, geocaching. The winter months are here now, and we're deciding whether or not to continue...it could be easier without the leaves...or harder because they are all over the trails...and then what if it snows? You pros can let us know in the poll I'm adding, or a comment.

We're so new that I'm sure there's all kinds of terms used that we don't know about, so bear with me as I take you with us on our journey...don't laugh to hard if I use the wrong terms...well then again, if I give you a laugh and make you smile, that's okay:-)

We already love the outdoors, love discovering new places, and like walking trails, though we don't do it nearly as much as we used to...so this hobby should be good exercise for us.

So far, I've been gathering information from geocaching.com, we joined for free to start out...our id is "pcnjbboomer"...if you're a member, look for us. We decided that $10 was a small price to pay to try the premium membership for a few months. There is also a local group in our part of the State that I plan to join.

We purchased a GPS unit suited for hiking, biking, trail walking, geocaching, etc., more about that later.

This seems like it's going to be fun, inexpensive, and something that will get us a bit of exercise and out in the great and beautiful outdoors!

The picture is of our first-ever find, it was raining, but beautiful walking along trails among the trees anyway. The pic should be dated 6/13 instead of 6/12.

What Is Geocaching?

According to geocaching.com, "Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache."

Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is most often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek", sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking.

Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica. As of November 22, 2009, there are over 945,023 active geocaches over the world. Geocaching.com http://www.geocaching.com/

CURRENT UPDATES Updated 12/3/09

I'll share any new info here

12/3/09 - In the fall we found 6 caches that were hid along one trail...a beautiful trail, into deep woods.  One of the caches looked was no longer in the spot it was supposed to be, and when we found it, it had teeth marks through it, which we are quite sure were from a bear, we've seen the way they look when they have destroyed our bird feeders.  So we patched it up and put it where it belonged.  We saw large bear tracks in the mud in the area, but no bears (thank goodness).  We loved the trail so much, we did the hike on two different weekends.

8/14/09 - Time has flown and we had a couple medical bumps in the road in the family, but hubby is recovering nicely, and we will be back out on the trails in a week I hope...I'm especially looking forward to the fall!

6/21/09 - What a nice Father's Day we had! My daughter had us all over for dinner and we went out as a family to a couple of caches I saved in the GPS in her area. One was quite a beautiful hike through the woods to a Fire Tower.

6/13/09 - We went out after the barbecue and found 3 caches, officially starting our new adventure. Lots of fun, even though it was raining. You can find us on geocaching.com, user pcnjbabyboomer - that will probably be it until next weekend.

6/12/09 - My GPS came a few days ago, and I've been spending time getting acquainted. I've uploaded some local caches from geocaching.com and have been trying to figure out the features...I think a lot of things will come clear when we get out and start using it. As circumstances would have it, we have a busy Sunday, and a lunch/barbecue to attend tomorrow. SO, think tonight I'm going to search for some caches near the location of the barbecue and get started after we eat. I'll let you know how we make out. Have a great weekend!

How do I find Caches?

Just to give you an idea of how easy it is to find caches using geocache.com, here are the steps that they suggest on their home page:

1. Register for a free membership.
2. Click "Hide & Seek a Cache."
3. Enter your postal code and click "search."
4. Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name.
5. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device.
6. Use your GPS device to assist you in finding the hidden geocache.
7. Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.
8. Share your geocaching stories and photos online.

When you join the site and find a cache that you are interested in tracking down from the long list that comes up when you enter your zip code, from the site you can send the coordinates to your GPS or phone. There's a map with the general location pinpointed, level of difficulty as far as how difficult a hike it will be and how long, and much more.

You also have your own "presence" at the site where you can record your adventures, and with other helpful information.

You may also have a local group that you can join, do a google search on the internet entering "geocaching" and your town, zip, or general location.

Google Earth and Geocaching

You'll notice if you visit geocaching.com that each cache is marked on a google map so that you can get a general idea of where the cache is.  We print out maps and descriptions before we go to help us get to the general area, then use the GPS to pinpoint the location of the cache.

Below is a google map with an area right across from us that has quite a few caches, but on Google Earth, there is actually a feature that allows you to save your caches on the map so that they are always visible whenever you return to that spot on "planet earth"...google earth, that is.

Some Thoughts on GPS Units

From what I've read, you don't need an expensive GPS unit to go geocaching, you do need one that accepts GPS coordinates, doesn't display street routes only. When you shop, here or elsewhere on the web, look carefully at the units. Some have maps, some do not. Once nice thing about Amazon is that you'll find many reviews of the units, and will learn a lot about them by reading what other customers have to say.

Shopped for a GPS Today

It's Saturday, June 6th and we shopped for a GPS in the stores, but I didn't see the one that I wanted, so we ended up coming home and ordering this Etrex Venture HC online today. I chose this one because the price was good, and because I know someone using it, and It has good reviews. I was tempted by one twice as much that had more features, and may one day wish I had purchased it, but know that this one will be quite enough. (Update...it has been perfect for what we are doing).

Why Choose Geocaching as a Hobby?

Hobbies can be expensive. Hubby and I have talked about a few different ideas of things we can do now that the children are grown. This hobby is not only inexpensive, it's good exercise, something we as boomers need and tend to slack on. It gets you away from the TV and computer, enjoying the great outdoors.

I haven't done enough research to find out whether there are caches in cities (update...there are!), but if you are a city dweller, this is a great way to get out into the country.

Geocaching on eBay

Ebay is one of my favorite places to shop and sell, so it's a natural to save some things here on my lens from eBay for future reference.

Father's Day Geocaching 6/21/09

Here's a shot my son took from the area near one of the caches we found on Father's Day. He set up the camera and did a great job of getting to his spot in the 10 second time frame he allowed for the automatic shot. (do we really look this wide...I don't think so, I'm sure it must be the camera angle...LOL...seriously, we don't...I hope).
