Geocaching, the outdoor treasure hunt.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game in which the participants use a GPS (global positioning system) to hide and find containers called geocaches or caches worldwide.

Caches can range in size from a micro as small as hardware nut to as large as an ice cream bucket. Hopefully it's a waterproof container...containing a logbook and maybe some "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value so that participants can "swap swag".

Geocaching is a wonderful outdoor hobby for an individual hoping to add exercise and scenic views to their schedule to a great free family hobby where parents get to spend time outside with their kids and the kids get a little treat for doing something other than sitting in front of the tv playing video games.

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing)...

A worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache.

The world of Geocaching...

"Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices.

The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment." (www.geocaching.com)

Geocaching fact:

There are currently 709,820 active geocaches worldwide!

Oh yeah! The great outdoors! Treasure-hunting! I'm game!

Fulltimers602 says:

I've found 60 caches so far. My most favorite find so far was a trail out to the ocean in Nova Scotia. I left a travel bug in Newfoundland that went to British Columbia, Hong Kong, and is now bopping around England.

Spending time with the family...outdoors, having fun, running around looking for hidden treasures!...yeah! I'm game!

Ahh...no thanks...running around in the woods looking for tupperware isn't for me.

Cache In Trash Out!

"Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers have been dedicated to cleaning up parks and other cache-friendly places around the world. Through these volunteer efforts, geocachers help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!

Annually, we celebrate International Cache In Trash Out events where geocachers have an opportunity to participate in coordinated worldwide clean-up efforts. Geocachers host clean-up events in their local area on the same day or weekend as other geocachers around the world. Together, we make an enormous positive impact.

Did we mention that we also have a bit of fun while we are at it?"

~quoted from geocaching.com

Extemely Important Note:

In the summer of 2008 my eldest child while geocaching with the family stepped on a 2x4 piece of wood with nails still in it. (it pierced his skin, it was painful but he's fine now)

We were on the Trans Canada Trail and across the street were residential homes, obviously someone was trashing out in a convenient bush area

...to geocachers: wear appropriate footwear & be careful!
...to trashers: think about what you are throwing out, while a piece of wood is not harmful, one with n

Geocaching...heard of it?...do it?...love it?...no thanks!

Geocaching has taken us to places we would never have known about and keeps me exercising. I walked four miles two days in a row looking for geocaches in downtown San Antonio.
