What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is basically a global treasure hunt. You enter the coordinates of a cache into your GPS receiver and find the cache! It's a really neat game. I'm only scratching the surface here on my lens; go to Geocaching.com to sign up and find out more!

What is a cache?

A cache is usually a container containing a logbook (to sign your name in) and sometimes trade items (called swag). The size of a geocache can range from very tiny (called "micro caches") to large. Some caches are not a physical container, like virtual caches. To see the full list of cache types supported by Geocaching.com, go to this page.

How does it work?

To start geocaching, you should sign up for an account at geocaching.com. Then you can search for caches in your area. Then you take your handy-dandy GPS receiver (yes, you do need one of those) and enter in the coordinates. Then you go look for the cache! Sometimes the cache owner will give hints in the cache listing to help you find it more easily.

What are travel bugs and geocoins?

Travel bugs and geocoins are both "trackable items". They are placed in a geocache like other items, but they have tracking numbers so that whoever finds them can log the bugs or coins on the website and place them in another cache. This allows the person who started the items to see where they go! And no, they aren't real bugs.

Poll

Yes, that's a boring title.

This description has nothing to do with the poll but it does comment on how boring the subtitle is.

Terracaching is an alternative website for geocaching that attempts to achieve greater quality rather than quantity.
Geocacher University
An informative (and interesting!) website that has good lessons on beginning to geocache. Highly recommended!

What do you think?

Is geocaching super great or is it a conspiracy from the US government to take over the world one cache at a time?
