Ranked #635 in Religion, #41,859 overall

Geoffrey Hodson (12 March 1886 in Lincolnshire, England - 23 January 1983 in Auckland, New Zealand) was a occultist, Theosophist, mystic, philosopher and esotericist, and a leading light for over 70 years in the Theosophical Society. He was educated in England. Aside from all that, he was also a freemason and a priest in the Liberal Catholic Church.

He served with distinction in the British Army as an Officer during the First World War, which experience seems to have prompted him to spend his life attempting to eradicate the causes of wars and suffering through his teachings and insights.

He was the author over fifty books on psychic powers, Theosophy, Spiritualism, mysticism, fairies, angels, meditation, clairvoyance, health and disease. On this page you will find the ones still in print.

He also wrote over two hundred articles and held radio talks. He traveled the world extensively lecturing for The Theosophical Society.

Clairvoyant Investigations

A sort of summary of Geoffrey Hodson's teachings. Instead of just noting what he saw, in this book you will also find great illustrations and proper organization.

In other words: the book to start with if you want to get to know his work.

Published after Hodson's death, including an introduction by one of the better theosophical teachers today: Joy Mills.

Except the World Mother picture, the images on this page come from this book. It contains many more such illustrations of nature spirits and devas.

Tree Fern Deva

Kingdom of the Gods

Based on his own clairvoyant observations, Hodson argues for a polytheism that is monotheistic at it's heart. Or perhaps I should say: a belief in many conscious forces in nature, but in the end one underlying consciousness that unites it all.

Probably one of his most philosophical and metaphysical of books.

The Cottingley Fairy Photographs

These came out at about the time that Geoffrey Hodson wrote a few of his books on nature spirits. Geoffrey Hodson supported the assertion that there were actually fairies in that neighbourhood. This of course does not mean the pictures were real.

I guess people asked the wrong questions. That sort of thing is always easier to see in hindsight.

World Maha Deva

On terminology: so what's a Maha Deva?

Deva means God in Sanskrit, the sacred language of ancient India. Geoffrey Hodson uses the term for nature spirits. From the consciousness embodied in plants, to the gaia consciousness of mother earth.

Maha Deva. The Sanskrit word Maha means Great (hence Mahatma: great teacher). So a Maha Deva is a Great Deva, a great nature spirit. This is why the spirit of the earth is called a Maha Deva.

Fairies at Work and Play

A customer at Amazon writes:

This book is really a useful little handbook for anyone wanting insight into the deva realm. Fairies, gnomes, undines, sylphs and other nature spirits are described here in a convincing manner from actual attunement. This work of clairvoyant observation by the author led to his later work including the well-known "The Kingdom of the Gods" which is now a classic in this field.

The carefully recorded observations by the author were all done in England in the early 1920s. There is homeliness about the way these stories are related. The author was deeply committed to learning about the ways of the small creatures. As far as freshness and authentic, clear observation I rate this small book alongside Dora van Gelder's very similar book written also in the 1920s. There are many books on nature spirits but few better than this for detail and understanding. I just wish it had colour pictures like "Kingdom of the Gods", as maybe then more folks would have found this book to appreciate it as I have.

On pictures of nature spirits and devas

Aren't the pictures on this page gorgeous? I think they're absolutely divine.

However, I want to stress that the general opinion about such pictures among those who's studied occultism and clairvoyance seriously is the following:

Any clairvoyant observation is colored by the expectations of the person seeing them.

In Hodson's time abstract art had hardly been invented. In fact: the earliest abstract paintings were influenced by clairvoyant observations by Leadbeater and Besant. Most of Hodson's sketches and observations remain figurative. That is reasonable: in order to depict something you think has consciousness, you would give it a face. But without a body like ours (a fern-spirit has a fern for a body after all), what use is a face?

People who've depicted nature spirits more recently have sometimes used semi-abstract line drawings to make it clear that these beings 'look' nothing like things we know in the physical world.

Brotherhood of Angels and Of Men

From Amazon:

A professed clairvoyant, Geoffrey Hodson believes the existence of angels to be real and tangible beings. The information contained in this volume was clairvoyantly received daily during a holiday visit to a remote English valley, and the author has given here the first part of teachings which continue whenever he can escape from his work in London to the peace and quiet to which are essential for their reception.

Call to the Heights

On the spiritual path

Geoffrey Hodson's invitation to the spiritual path. Meant for those who are tired of the ordinary life of selfish pursuits: this book describes the theosophical ideals Hodson embodied according to his admirers.

The language is lofty. The ideals, for a person in this world, may seem too idealistic. But the vistas opened are truly inspiring.

Yes, I believe the whole world is embodied consciousness.

spirituality says:

I'll go on record and say that I've talked to plants - in fact urged one to bloom or risk being killed by the humans on the estate. So yes, I do believe plants have consciousness.

No, I gave up believing in fairy tales a long time ago.

At the Sign of the Square and Compass

Like many theosophists of his time: Geoffrey Hodson wasn't only an occultist. Nor was he merely a Liberal Catholic Priest. He was also a Freemason. In this book he shares his ideas about the underlying meaning of their symbolism.

Fairies and Clairvoyance

Geoffrey Hodson played his part, I suppose, in the modernization of the image people have of fairies. These days fairies are part of a whole art genre: the fantasy art. Here are some examples of that.
