English born George Frederick Watts was a self-taught painter who created his own style. Though he was acquainted with most of the Pre-Raphaelites and even a close friend of Lord Leighton's, Watts works were mostly allegorical subjects, and he became known as 'the Victorian Michelangelo. His first exhibit at the Royal Academy was at the young age of 20, in 1837. Later he won a prize of 300 guineas for Caratacus Led in Triumph through the Streets of Rome and the money enabled him to travel to Italy to study the Renaissance painters.

biography

Watts was an ardent advocate of large mural painting, calling for grand projects, many of which were never realized. He told artists to "Paint your courts of justice as so to impress the witness with the abhorrence of falsehood...Paint your hospitals with great subjects of miraculous cures from the Gospels."

George Watts was also a successful portrait painter who came up with the Victorian 'Valhalla' style of painting close ups of faces in standard size. Other works to his credit are sculptures, and he did some illustrative pieces including Dalziel's Bible Gallery. Watt's was also known for giving away his work, one of which was presented as a gift to the United States. The piece was accepted by Special Act of Congress, but in the president's absence it was not allowed on the White House grounds for the reason of it being considered obscene.

When the Tate Gallery opened on July 21, 1897, the core of their collection consisted of Sir Henry Tate's collection, the Chantrey pictures, and 18 works donated by Watts. When offered a baronetcy for his contribution to art Watts refused, though later accepted the Order of Merit.

Museums: George Watts may be found at Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, National Portrait Gallery, London and Tate Gallery, London
