George Mason

This lens is about the music of George Mason. An artist of whom there are not many pictures of (except for the baby photos in the video to Boys Don't Cry below and the about author section here). I came across George on my travels through the backwoods of North Georgia. Okay, it was spring break and I was partying, not like I'm some kind of Thoreau, although that would be cool.

George was singing some songs by a campfire (with his friend who is known on YouTube as the unknown artist and George Mason) that guy is kind of strange, he loves his anonymity (for the sake of this piece we will refer to him as U.A.). At any rate, I came to learn of George's passing via a phone call from U. A. He wanted to know if I could help him record some videos and write some of George's songs and poems down for posterity. To say the least, I agreed, and thus the following is born.

Hopefully, in time, we will be adding a lot more to this page. So please, check back regularly for more songs and poems and stories. Along with me and U. A. you too can help explore the world and works of George Mason.

Unknown Artist

The unknown artist is, like I said, rather odd, at least in the sense that he likes to maintain his anonymity. He first learned to play guitar when he was 16, after receiving a guitar on his birthday. He met George from the neighborhood in which they both grew up. George showed a flare for writing while U. A. wrote music, bringing the songs to life. George wrote the lyrics while U. A. wrote the music. A collaboration cut all too short, but not before the two produced some estimated total of 50 songs, give or take a few. As the songs eventually become recorded (albeit not all that professionally recorded, save for Boys Don't Cry) I will post more to this lens.

Ever tightly on me
And the Heart is a lonely hunter
Makes me struggle to breath
And I stir Nights
Every Night Try to fight
this feeling in me
Test a soul's worth
Can it break
Will it break
Can it ever be free

(Chorus)

Center of My Life
What is it that I bring
What is it that I give
is there any meaning to spring?

(Verse 2)

And if I fail now
Will I win
Could I ever succeed
Test a soul's worth
Can it break
Will it break
Can I ever be free?

(Bridge)

Let us compare notes
Let us compare souls
Let us compare dreams and mythologies and tongues

Repeat Chorus

Onset of Disbelief

Capo 2nd Fret

(Verse 1) C major ninth, Bm, C

I stand before the best
I hope I can stand the test
My thoughts alone in the rain,
but there because of my pain
G, C
I know it won't be long
but not before this song

(Chorus) G, D, Em, G, D, C
Conquer me you shall
My thoughts are yours anyhow
I only wish you could see
What all you mean to me

(Verse 2)
My journey lingers on
Like a phone call at dawn
The breeze blows through the trees
as the leaves run through the grass

Although we go on
What we find God only knows

Repeat Chorus

(Bridge) Am, Em7, G, Em7, C, D

Can't you see the storm
Tearing down the walls
I know the rain will end
but not before I begin

Boys Don't Cry

Capo 2nd fret

Verse: C7 no5, E, C7 no 5

Bridge: E, A7, B7

I'm walking and I'm traveling
I don't really know which way I've been
The people they call me crazy
I don't even know what day it is

And you don't want to beat a horse
and you don't cram at night
Because the world is a fist fight

repeat verse

Live alone on your own in a home
You know the night life
and the night life has made you a clam

Boys Don't Cry now
Boys Don't Cry
They Breathe and they die....

And you won't go to hell
And you won't know the spell
Let the cards fall where they may....

George's Book of Poetry

Kaleidoscopic Remains of a Self-Portrait

George's teenage years can be found to be a bit introverted, self-deprecating, and somewhat longing. However, the poems speak for themselves. Some obscure references coupled with lines of barren thoughts. U.A. found his journals and has currently typed up the first volume. Kaleidoscopic Remains of a Self-Portrait is the title of that journal. The bottom buy now link will take you to where you can purchase a copy of the book in it's entirety. It is only 1.99. In PDF format. If you are interested please email your interest here.

Some samples are below.

In Earnest Care

In earnest care
I wish to write tonight
You see, I started out
Thinking I could love you,
Like no one ever could.
As though no one came before, after, or even now.
Who none could compare to anyone or anything
My love for you
Though it's true that everyone
And every experience be unique,
Had I ceased to exist at age ten
You would still find shelter in another's arms.
So, what be that
Which holds me still,
Wishing for your hand,
As though all others be in vain?
Now some may describe, a younger man
One lusting for mere sex.
But I plea to you
It is not my fault, love and sex
Be so intertwined
That it is easy to confuse my attempts for one,
With that for the other.
Now others may describe, a silly fool
One who claims to know most all
But can't see the leap
From the ledge to you
As a certain fall.
Yet I do.
So why? one may ask
Do I set myself up to fall
As though the answer lies on my lips.
Truth is, I have no clear answer.
Only that I wish to love you
For all the potential I feel I see.
Potential, that you may love me.

I Wish I Could Draw

As quiet angers
And I see you mad
I know the world can't be so sad

To get you back in my beam
Like Scottie on his trek
I fear you never were
Like a dream
Teasing till wake
Like a beautiful dream

A picture of an island
Others sail, I lose myself
Like I was once lost in you
Like you were once lost in me

A smile upon your face
I wish that I could give
I understand not wanting to be told
But how does one get to ask?

An imaginary conclusion
Recapture love in our web
Let the hero have the girl

I hope you can forgive

News Report September 2003

Oh Christa, what have you done?
You've gone and gotten yourself in a bind
Who knows, perhaps you're not to blame
For an unsolved murder mystery
That's left you lying stabbed twelve times.

Enigma

They put you on a pedestal
And tell you that you're beautiful
Your choices never few
They line up for miles
Just to catch a view
But you aren't a bird
Nor a lifeless photograph
I stand amongst the crowd
But outside of the line
Like a hapless little mime
It's not my place to speak
Not my place to judge
On how a smile so bright
Can be worn like a glove
And peeled away so quickly
Revealing mounds of grief
To relinquish scores of pain
I wish could be my gift
But speechless is my fate
As beauty never rests
