A Tribute to one of Americas Funniest and Controversial Dudes

On June 22, 2008 America and the world lost a great comedian, spokesman and all around great dude. He spoke out against wars, 9-11, politics, religion just to name a few of his favorite topics. He had strong feelings and opinions, very much like myself, in which he shared in a way that brought it to the surface like no one else could. Please take a moment to read about the man we knew and loved.

If you like this lens, please favorite it and give it 5 stars. Don't forget to join my fan club. Thank you.

The Great George Carlin

The Early Years

George Denis Patrick Carlin was born May 12, 1937 in New York. His parents separated soon after he was born. Raised by his mother, George dropped out of school in the ninth grade in 1953. Later in 1954 he joins the US Air Force and starts a job off-base as a disc-jockey in Shreveport, LA.

By 1957 George had received a court-martial three times as well as several other punishments (below court-martial) and was eventually discharged.

After leaving the USAF he worked at a couple of radio stations before hooking up with Jack Burns. George and Jack performed in many clubs and on television during their brief period together. They parted ways in 1962.

In 1961 George gets married. He and Brenda had their first child, a daughter, Kelly in June, 1963.

Through the rest of the 60's he moved to Los Angeles, did some nightclub shows and made the first of many appearances on Merv Griffin and The Mike Douglas Show.

In 1966 George made his first acting debut on That Girl. He played Marlo Thomas' agent. He recorded his first album "Take Offs and Put Ons" which received a Grammy nomination. He also played the car hop, Herbie Fleck in the movie "With Six You Get Eggroll".

During the 1970's George grew his beard, releases "FM & AM" and wins a Grammy after the album goes gold.

George released many albums during the 70's. He hosted the first "Saturday Night Live" TV show. He appeared on various other TV shows and did his first HBO Special "On Location: George Carlin at USC".

It was during the 1970's that the controversial FCC investigation took place on the "Seven Dirty Words" you can't say on TV. After some time in the court system the FCC finally won the case and foul language was banned from television during "primetime" when children may be watching.

1980's and 1990's George Carlin

During the 1980's George had his second heart attack that resulted in angioplasty surgery. But did that slow him down? No way! In no time he was back recording albums, writing, and doing his third, fourth "Carlin on Campus" and fifth HBO Specials. He hosted "Saturday Night Live" for the second time and enjoyed it more as he got to perform in some of the skits.

In 1987 George Carlin got his star placed in the Hollywood Walk of Fame at the corner of Vine and Selma Streets. He also appeared in the movie "Outrageous Fortune" with Bette Midler and Shelley Long as Frank Madras, a drunken, ex-hippie tracker.

And by 1989 he had done another HBO Special and a couple more movies including "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure". I really loved that movie!

He bought out Little David and received the masters to all his albums.

George continues doing HBO Specials, more albums and movies. "Working Trash" with Ben Stiller, "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" and several other TV and Cable specials.

In 1997, George turns 60 and publishes his first real book "Braindroppings". He lost his wife of 36 years and moves to Las Vegas a couple of years later.

In 1999 "George Carlin: The Little David Years: 1971-1977" was released on Atlantic Records.

George Carlin 2000 to 2008

Over the last eight years George Carlin has become quite the king of comedy. He speaks out against everything with a joke, but gets the underlying point across. No one is spared a jab, George took them all on with no qualms what so ever.

Throughout his lifetime George Carlin produced 23 albums, appeared in 14 HBO Specials, written three books and numerous other stories. He's appeared on several TV shows, in commercials and quite a few movies.

He has won Grammy awards, been inducted into the Comedy Hall of Fame and received many other specialty awards. Received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. George was a co-founder of the comedy web site Laugh.com.

One of my favorite of his many looks at stupid things is..."Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them?" Typical George at his best.

George was the icon of comedy and will be missed by all. Now he has a new audience to entertain in heaven. But I think he may have to tone it down a bit! Here's to you George.
