Covered Bridges

I have always had this love for covered bridges. They hold a lot of history and have seen more than most eyes could imagine. A Covered Bridge also holds a lot of mystery and often are considered spooky and haunting.

Since I have been so involved with photography lately, my husband and I have been a lot of research on local covered bridges in Georgia. So far we have found four of them and each one has been a joy to visit and to photograph. The one thing that saddens me is all of the vandalism-I have a hard understanding why some people would want to be so mean as to destroy a Historical Landmark.

This page is about the Covered Bridges we have been able to find so far. I also added a brief history of the bridge. I will be adding more to this page as time allows and as we find more.

Elder Mill Covered Bridge

Watkinsville, Georgia

This bridge was built in 1897 by Nathaniel Richardson. It is a 99 foot long bridge. Constructed in the town lattice design, the bridge's web of planks crisscrossing at 45 to 60 degree angles are fastened with wooden pegs, or trunnels, at each intersection. This bridge is one of the few covered bridges in Georgia continuing to carry traffic without underlying steel beams.
This information came from the plaque that stands in front of the bridge.

Howard's Covered Bridge

Comer, Georgia

This bridge was built in 1904-05 to replace an earlier structure. This bridge was named after a pioneer family who settled near Big Cloud's Creek in the late 1700's. It is a 164 foot long bridge. The webs of planks crisscrossed at 45 to 60 degree angles and are fastened with wooden pegs, or trunnels, at each intersection.

Hurricane Shoals Covered Bridge

Maysville, Georgia

The original bridge was built in 1882 and was 127 feet long. Vandals burned the original bridge in 1972 ruining a nine decade year old landmark. The bridge in this photo was built in 1994; portions of the original footings are still visible today.

Watson Mill Covered Bridge

Comer, Georgia

The original bridge was built in 1885 by Washington W.W. King and was 236 feet long. When the covered bridge was rebuilt, it was built 229 feet long and is still considered the longest covered bridge in Georgia and one of the longest covered bridges in the United States.

The bridge was restored in 1973 by the Georgia Department of Transportation to serve as a nucleus for the surrounding state park. There was a time when Georgia had over 200 different covered bridges and today there are only about 20 that remain

Wonderful of you to create a record here of some of Georgia's covered bridges. Over 220 feet looks really long in your image of Watson Mill.

OH how beautiful. there is something fascinating and mysterious about covered bridges. You page is wonderful. Great photos as usual. I don't think we have any covered bridges around here. I've never seen one. But they have them down in Missouri.
