Sightseeing in Georgia
I was born and raised in Georgia, USA. I have never known any other way of life than "Southern".
If you come to Georgia for a vacation or just for sightseeing, you'll need a car. It's a big state and the sometimes very long distance between cities or towns is filled with nothing but highway and trees. We like it that way. Green is good.
In some of the larger cities such as Atlanta, Macon, Savannah, or Columbus you will find public transportation but it usually only runs through the work week and only until sundown.
The picture is our State Capitol Building located in the heart of downtown Atlanta. This is a historic landmark. It was among the earliest buildings to have elevators, central steam heat, and combination gas and electric lights. That is real gold you are seeing on the dome. It was mined in Dahlonega, GA. Yes, we even have our very own goldmines.
There is a lot to see so let's take a virtual tour of my home state and hit the highlights. I'll even add personal moment or two in here for your enjoyment.

Welcome Visitors to our Beautiful State!

When you come to Georgia for a vacation, you'll want to have a nice place to stay. Consider a vacation home rental. The first thing you will notice when you cross the state line into Georgia from anywhere is the way we speak. In the North Georgia mountains you may still hear some of the mountain folk say "You'uns" which means "Y'all" in real Georgia terms. "Y'all" in outlander speak means "You all". It includes everyone in your group or family.
The second thing you will notice is that we are mostly friendly (unless you are a Federal Agent looking to break up our moonshine stills, but that is another story). If you are used to being ignored, you have a new experience awaiting you! You may get invited to dinner before we even know your last name. We like company and someone to tell our tall tales to. Sadly, our families eventually get tired of hearing them.

Atlanta or Hot'lanta
Atlanta has well earned it's nickname of Hot'lanta! Some years the summers get as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity is unbearable at times and we all have a bad hair day. Of course that just means we get down to our skivvies and play in the water hose or our kiddie pools.
There are some major musical entertainers with homes here too which is another reason for the nickname. The recent uprising in HipHop music seems to converge here in Atlanta sometimes. For that reason alone Atlanta makes the headlines nearly everyday, whether it's good or bad news.
Georgia on My Mind
The song didn't become a major hit until it was redone by Georgia native Ray Charles 30 years after "Georgia on My Mind" was first recorded by Hoagy Carmichael, and has been recorded by many artists including Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Gladys Knight, Willie Nelson, just to name a very few. Ray Charles sang and played it in front of the Georgia General Assembly (the state legislature) on March 7, 1979. It was adopted as our official state song on April 24 of the same year. This song fills me full of "Georgia girl" pride.

- Lovely tour of your 'Georgia'. I lived on Tybee Island outside Savannah for 13 years (1993-2007) and loved it. Now my brother is moving to Savannah! Wish I was still there! Georgia continues to be 'on my mind' .... :-)
