Can A Gerd Diet Alone Help?

Can a gerd diet help you?  What about medications? Natural Remedies? A gerd diet is individual as each person may have different triggers. Known items to avoid include the following: coffee, Tea, Soda (caffeinated), Chocolate, Citrus fruits, Citrus drinks, Fried Foods, Fatty Foods, Tomato based products, Alcohol, Onions and Garlic, Peppermint as well as others. A gerd diet is very restrictive as you can see. Other suggestions is eating small meals, but more frequently. The premise of this is the stomach will be less likely to back up into the esophagus if it is less full.

A Serious Health Issue

You experience heartburn (acid reflux) when hydrochloric acid backs up from your stomach, burning the sensitive lining of your esophagus. Acid reflux can lead to serious medical conditions requiring hospitalization and surgery.

       * Lung damage: stomach acid can actually back up into your lungs.

       * Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) Damage: This crucial flap-like valve separates your stomach from your throat.

       * Barrett's Esophageal, a condition that leads to esophageal cancer, one of the most rapidly escalating cancers in the world.

Foods that aggravate acid reflux include tomato-based sauces, fried and fatty foods, refined sugars, alcohol, citrus fruits, cola and caffeinated beverages.

Overeating also contributes to the condition. Whenever you overeat, the stomach gets stressed out and can even spasm. This pushes your food back up, causing acid to leak up where it causes pain and tissue damage.

A Serious Solution It's almost a miracle! Today, heartburn sufferers are discovering a natural and lasting solution. Informed consumers like you are choosing to reject the false promises of pharmaceutical drugs and over-the-counter remedies and their destructive side effects.

Can A Cough Be A Sign Of Acid Reflux Or Gerd?

When Your Child Has A Persistent Cough.

You may think of many things when you or your child has a persistent cough, but it's usually not acid reflux or gerd. However that is entirely possible and something to investigate. Often the child with the chronic cough may be diagnosed with asthma.

Apparently what happens is that the reflux can cause the chronic cough or asthma which can also lead to a condition known as Barrett's esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition(see more on this at http://www.squidoo.com/acidrefluxcure/ ). Reflux more than likely begins the process, causing the asthma. The medications the doctor prescribe for asthma exacerbates the reflux, creating a cycle.

One way of alleviating the issues is to have laproscopic fundoplication operation which can stop and eliminate the reflux. The asthma is eliminated as well.

A chronic cough can be an indicator that your reflux is out of control...this can be very dangerous to your health and should be investigated.

ScienceDirect - Gastroenterology Clinics of North America : The Many Manifestations of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Presentation, Evaluation, and Treatment
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common problem that is expensive to diagnose and treat. The disease is increasing in prevalence in the Western world, with important risk factors being obesity and the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Heartburn and acid regurgitation are classic symptoms of GERD, but their sensitivity is poor. Ambulatory esophageal pH testing is the most sensitive test for GERD, whereas endoscopy is the most specific test. Medical treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) has revolutionized the treatment of GERD and its complications, but long-term side effects do exist. Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery and PPIs have similar efficacy in the few available long-term trials. This article reviews the presentation, evaluation, and treatment of GERD.

ISLAMABAD: If you're popping antacids regularly, you could be suffering more than mild heartburn.

And you may be ignoring the symptoms of a more serious, though treatable, digestive disorder called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Experts say many people mistakenly assume GERD is heartburn and aren't aware of other symptoms such as bloating or gas, an acid taste in the mouth, trouble swallowing or regurgitation of food.

In fact, almost nine of 10 people in a recent national survey incorrectly assumed GERD is simply heartburn

Ulcers

The liquid from the stomach that refluxes into the esophagus damages the cells lining the esophagus. The body responds in the way that it usually responds to damage, which is with inflammation (esophagitis). The purpose of inflammation is to neutralize the damaging agent and begin the process of healing. If the damage goes deeply into the esophagus, an ulcer forms. An ulcer is simply a break in the lining of the esophagus that occurs in an area of inflammation. Ulcers and the additional inflammation they provoke may erode into the esophageal blood vessels and give rise to bleeding into the esophagus. Occasionally, the bleeding is severe and may require transfusions of blood and endoscopic (a procedure in which a tube is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus) or surgical treatment.
More babies are being medicated for acid reflux | Wilkes-Barre lifestyle, gardening, home and society news | timesleader.com - The Times Leader
Babies famously spit up after dining because they are, well, babies. And although it's usually more of a laundry issue than a medical one, doctors are overprescribing reflux medications in infants, according to a new study in the journal Pediatrics.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when stomach acid goes the wrong way, flowing back into the esophagus. It's caused when a valve between the esophagus and stomach does not close properly. If stomach acid is irritating a baby's esophagus, he may cry or arch after feeding, with or without spitting up.

But how common is true GERD in colicky babies? And why are we seeing an increase in the use of a class of drugs called proton-pump inhibitors, the most powerful of three major classes of antacids?

Al Dente: When physicians and dentists talk - Malden, MA - Malden Observer
Malden - Not long ago, my physician told me that I have gastro-esophageal reflux disease, or GERD. That explains my persistent hoarseness, frequent sore throat, and occasional chest pain.

Later, I saw my physician when he came in for a dental check up. I told him that one of my patients has extensive tooth decay due to GERD. My physician was surprised. He did not realize that the acidic stomach contents may enter the mouth unnoticed to cause decay.

Physicians and dentists have plenty to talk about. Physicians organizations and insurance companies distribute brochures to patients, white papers to physicians, and informational packets to dentists enumerating the many ways dental health influences physical health. Blue Cross Blue Shield's Dental Blue insurance even offers the ?Enhanced Dental Benefit? program for people with diabetes, and heart disease, and for pregnant women.

Bear with a short anatomy lesson that begins with the esophagus. It's the long swallowing tube that travels from the throat through the chest to the stomach in the abdomen. It has to pass through an opening in the diaphragm, the horizontal muscle that separates the chest and the abdomen. That opening is a hiatus. A hiatal hernia is the upward bulging of the stomach into the chest through the opening in the diaphragm.

Acid reflux ? more correctly, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD ? is the upward spurting of stomach acid into the esophagus. The esophagus isn't prepared to handle corrosive stomach acid. Acid in the esophagus produces the familiar pain we call heartburn.
Eating Late: When you should eat your last meal if you want a good night's sleep
Just as your mother told you, the time you eat the last meal of the day can determine whether you are going to suffer from a sleepless night of stomach acid pains or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux).

Ideally, say researchers, the last meal of the day should be eaten six hours before you go to bed if you are a GERD sufferer and you want a trouble-free sleep. GERD sufferers who eat just two hours before bedtime are almost certainly going to experience digestion pains in the night.

Gerd Linked To Obesity In Women

Now don't get me wrong, not all women with gerd are obese by any means. All this study found was that gerd is found in many obese women.

The study was published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology. The research group was from the University La Sapienza of Rome and was led by a Dr. Corazziari.

The researchers found when they compared obese woman to the average population, that being obese or even somewhat overweight are risk factors for GERD. However they did not find this to be true in men.

The inference is that if women control their weight they may be able to control their gerd. Diet plays a role in many aspects of this disease.
