German Blue Rams

German Rams have been described as hard to care for fish, but we haven't had that experience at all.

Of course we got our Rams from a breeder, so our German Blue Rams have never faced a lot of the hardships that face aquarium store fish.

We got 6 rams from a breeder that we found on some local forums, brought them home, and they started laying eggs the next week!

We were really happy.

We were even happier that we waited to buy our Rams from the person we bought them from, instead of buying them from a pet store.

Easy or not?

If you've kept German Blue Rams do you think they are easy or difficult to care for?

Easy or hard?

Easy

stina says:

Easy as long as you watch your water quality

scotty says:

easy as never had a problem with mine but if u get them from a lfs make sure u sit there and watch them before u buy them cause alot can be sick and most of all you can watch which ones have paired up already

blackspanielgallery says:

I see no one voted hard, and knowing nothing of these first hand I will go with them.

Coral33(not real name don't want people to know) says:

they are somewhat hard but i have gotten mine to breed 6 or 7 times but i have no fry they die after 2 days of hatching what am i doing wrong? any advise?

cole says:

easy

Hard

mad cichlid scientist says:

caring for these fish is not easy. anyone who says it is, is eather just lucky with their 1st 1 or 2 rams or they are grossly over bosting their ego. ram cichlids are one of the most sensitive fresh water fish in the world. more so than discus even. they are very sensitve to parasites more than they are disease. very easily stressed. once stressed to a certain level their resistance to parasites which are probably already inside them is lowered to the point that they take over and over whelm the host. thanks for listening.the mad cichlid scientist.

handsome says:

it is very hard

A 21 day old German Blue Ram chasing Baby Brine Shrimp. Tiny, isn't it?

7 week German Blue Ram Update

The German Blue Rams are doing great.

I looked at them last week, and could see a tiny outline of black on the first ray of some of their dorsal fins, now the outline is on the front and back of most of the ram fry.

We're also starting to see black stripes down the middle of the fish, and they are developing more of the German Blue Ram shape.

They still love to eat, and are eating finely crushed flake food, baby brine shrimp, and Hikari first bites.

Baby ram update

Here are some of the baby rams.

These guys have all been sold, and moved on to their new homes.

Unfortunately 7 of them were lost when the new owners tank crashed.

Letting your babies go can be heartbreaking.

Knowing what happens to them after they leave can be even worse, but when they do great, and you get to see them swimming around in their little adult colors it's just amazing.

Prime Spotlight Personal Review

Seachem Prime 500ml

Amazon Price: $7.51 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

I've been using Prime pretty much since I've been keeping fish. I did switch to another brand when I couldn't get Prime locally, and I had more trouble with the fish tanks. I know it was horrible, but it was years ago, and I can't remember what happened. I use Prime in my saltwater and freshwater tanks, and I've never had a problem with it.
