Having a German Shepherd Puppy Changes Your Life

Back in June 2007, I bought a German shepherd puppy. That's her in the picture. We named her Marlie, after the book, Marley and Me, but since she's a girl we spelled it Marlie. Are you considering a German Shepherd puppy? I can tell you it will change your life. Besides the usual addition of a puppy to a household- housebreaking, waking up in the night, chewing, etc.- a German Shepherd puppy adds an intelligent, playful, and loyal addition to your family.

Training My German Shepherd Puppy

This Is One Smart Puppy!

I enrolled Marlie in a puppy class at our local Petsmart. I chose a late afternoon class, because I wanted my daughter to handle her during the training. Marlie and my daughter were star students all during puppy class. They skipped Beginner Obedience Training, and moved right onto Intermediate Obedience Training. By December, Marlie graduated from Advanced Obedience Training. I've been so proud of my daughter watching her dedication to training her puppy.

My daughter not only taught her basic obedience commands, she also taught her tricks. Some of Marlie's tricks are:

Shake
High 5
Roll Over
Jump - Over her knee
Jump - Through a Hula Hoop!
Spin Around
Hold a Treat on Her Nose and Wait

Marlie's newest trick is saying her prayers. She puts her front paws up on my daughter's arm, and then puts her head down. It's adorable!

It's amazing to watch this dog and how much she wants to please my daughter.

My German Shepherd Puppy's Favorite Game

Of course it involves puppy treats!

Marlie loves to play "Find It!" We start by giving her the "Down" and "Wait" commands and let her see and smell a puppy treat. Then we walk out of the room and hide a treat somewhere in another room. We started close by, and have gradually moved further and further from where she is waiting. Once we hide the treat, we return to her and tell her to "Find It!" She doesn't give up until she does!

:Loved it! German Shepherds Rule! This is the 2nd DVD we got from this series. The first was the interactive puppy training and helped us potty-train our new German Shepherd. Over all they are interesting and informative and gives good detailed information on the breed. Plan on getting the Dog Tricks next as I see it is a top seller. The basic obedience worked good with our puppy too.
