German Shepherd - One of the Newer Breeds
The German Shepherd is considered to be one of the newer breeds of dogs. 1891 became the start of the breed that we know today. A group of shepherding dog enthusiasts in Germany formed the Phylax Society with the intention of creating standardized dog breeds in Germany. The society disbanded after only three years in 1894, due to internal conflicts regarding the traits that the society should promote; some members believed dogs should be bred solely for working purposes, while others believed dogs also should be bred for appearance. Though unsuccessful in their goal, the Phylax Society had inspired the vision of how the German Shepherd was to emerge.
Max Von Stephanitz Ultimate Plan
First German Shepherd Dog Registered
At this time, an ex-cavalry captain and former student of the Berlin Veterinary College, was one such ex-member. He believed strongly that dogs should be bred for working. He became the acclaimed father of the breed. He had long admired the qualities of intelligence, strength, and ability found in many native sheepdog breeds but had yet to see one which embodied all of his ideals. Recognizing the shift away from herding, Max Von Stephanitz ultimate plan was to breed an all purpose working dog. While visiting a show with a friend in 1899, he saw a dog that impressed him greatly to all accounts that he purchased the dog and promptly formed a society, the Verein Deutsche Sch'ferhunde, which, in turn, created the Schutzhund Trials. The trials were a breed test for the German Shepherd; any dog which did not pass the test was prohibited to breed. These trials are responsible for how quickly the German Shepherd's working abilities were advanced. This was a milestone in the breed's history and marked the beginning of a new era for it. From this date the German Shepherd as a specific breed had arrived.
The dog that von Stephanitz purchased was called Hektor Linksrhein but was later named Horand v Grafeth by Max von Stephanitz. Horand was quickly used in many breeding programs. He became the dog that best exemplified the goals of early breeders. Horand was declared to be the first German Shepherd Dog and was the first dog added to the society's breed register.
Horand's most celebrated son was Hektor v Shwaben. Hektor was inbred with another of Horand's offspring and produced Beowulf, who later fathered a total of eighty-four pups, mostly through being inbred with Hektor's other offspring. Beowulf's progeny also were inbred and it is from these pups that all German Shepherds draw a genetic link. It is believed the society accomplished its goal mostly due to Von Stephanitz's strong, uncompromising leadership and he is therefore, credited with being the creator of the German Shepherd Dog.
Later, as a result of von Stephanitz's energetic campaigns on behalf of these dogs, German Shepherds were used extensively during World War I as messenger dogs, rescue dogs and guard dogs. In little time British, French and American soldiers discovered the German Shepherd's remarkable qualities. As a result, some servicemen took the dogs home. From that moment, the breed's popularity grew by leaps and bounds outside Germany.
Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge
Rin Tin Tin
(Geraldine R. Dodge with Rin Tin Tin in 1929.)
At the 1933 show, Mrs. Dodge brought Rin-Tin-Tin in from Hollywood, using the popular film star to further interest in the German Shepherd breed. It was not unusual in those days to see major two-legged celebrities and stars such as Gary Cooper in attendance at Morris & Essex shows. With dog stars like Rin-Tin-Tin, German Shepherds gained in popularity within the United States.
Mrs. Dodge died in 1973, but her influence on dogs and charities lives on through her charitable foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. One of these charities is the St. Hubert's Giralda Animal Welfare and Education Center located on the grounds of Giralda Farms, her old estate. Giralda was the name of Mrs. Dodge's kennel. St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center was the beneficiary of the 2000 Morris & Essex dog show.
Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz
Developed the German Shepherd Dog breed

Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz (December 30, 1864 - 22 April 1936) was a German dog breeder who is credited with having developed the German Shepherd Dog breed as it is currently known, set guidelines for the breed standard, and was the first president of the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (S.V.).
Stephanitz was a career cavalry officer and spent some time serving at the Veterinary College in Berlin. Here he gained valuable knowledge about biology, anatomy, and the science of movement all of which he later applied to the breeding of dogs. He was promoted to Captain in 1898 and shortly after took to retirement.
On 22 April 1899 Stephanitz founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (S.V.) with his friend Artur Meyer. The first Schutzhund trial was held in Germany in 1901 and tested the dogs abilities in tracking, obedience and protection. The English Kennel Club honoured the breed with its own register in 1919.
Stephanitz died in Dresden on the 37th anniversary of the club he and Artur Meyer founded together. The S.V. is still in existence and is headquartered in Augsburg, Germany.
Horand v Grafeth
formally Hektor Linksrhein
Horand v Grafeth was declared to be the first German Shepherd Dog and was the first dog added to the society's breed register. Beowulf

Beowulf was the proud father of a total of eighty-four pups. Grandson of Horand.
Appearance of the German Shepherd
A Smart Dog
A strong, agile, well muscled animal, alert and full of life, German Shepherds are a large-breed dog which generally are between 22 and 26 in at the withers and weigh between 49 and 88 lb. The ideal height is 25 in., according to Kennel Club standards. They have a domed forehead, a long square-cut muzzle and a black nose. The jaws are strong, with a scissor-like bite. The eyes are medium-sized and brown with a lively, intelligent, and self-assured look. The ears are large and stand erect, open at the front and parallel, they often are pulled back during movement. They have a long neck, which is raised when excited and lowered when moving at a fast pace. The tail is bushy and reaches to the joint of the hind leg.
German Shepherds sport a double coat. The outer coat, which is shed all year round, is close and dense with a thick undercoat. The coat is accepted in two variants; medium and long. Faults in some Shepherd's coat include soft, silky, too long outer coat, woolly, curly, and open coat. German Shepherds can be a variety of colors, the most common of which are the tan and black and red and black varieties. Both varieties have black masks and saddles. Rarer variations include the sable, all-black, all-white, liver and blue varieties. The all-black variety is acceptable; however, the blue and liver are considered to be serious faults and the all-white is grounds for instant disqualification in some standards. This is because the white coat is more visible, making the dog a poor guard dog, and is harder to see in conditions such as snow.
A German Shepherd can live from 10-15 years, if completely healthy.

What does that mean?
Understanding of New Commands:
Less than 5 repetitions.
Obey First Command: 95% of the time or better. Now doesn't that get your tail wagging?
I'm not sure how they get these polls. My cousin Ringo, who is a Border Collie is ranked as the brightest. I know I am as smart as he is! I won't howl too much about that. But do you know what really gets me growling? A poodle - that's right - a poodle is number 2 on the list. Come on, did he pay someone off with his cute curly hairdo?

Temperament of a German Shepherd
German Shepherds are highly active dogs, fearless, but not hostile and often are described in breed standards as self-assured and never shy. They have a willingness to learn. Shepherds can become over-protective of their family and territory, especially if not socialized correctly. Due to their loyal temperament, Shepherds bond well with children they know. While typically approachable, Shepherds do not become immediate friends with strangers. German Shepherds are highly obedient and not easily distracted, but due to their self-strong will must be trained by a firm hand. Like most large breeds, Shepherds can be aggressive and uncontrollable if not trained correctly.Update: If you need a little help with your dog or cat, but don't know who to ask, here is some great information from an expert trainer.

- Know this, O worthy and diligent lensmaster;
With accomplishment you’ve earned a tryster.
As a token of immense appreciation expressed,
A squid angel leaves this lens heartily blessed.
On a rendering that is sparkling in its own right,
Propagating an appealing thought well and quite;
If you were to notice a slender shimmering crust;
From the angel’s wand, it is a spill of stardust.
