Germs and Bacteria - What are They?

Germs and bacteria are often thought of as one and the same...This common perception is only partly true...

This is because though many bacteria may be classified as germs, not all germs can be classified as bacteria..."Germs," is the technical term that refers to all microorganisms that potentially poses health risks...Likewise, not all bacteria are hazardous to your health...

In fact, there are types of 'good' bacteria that are important in being healthy as they maintain the balance of your digestive system...This however, does not overshadow the fact that there exist 'bad' bacteria that cause illnesses and diseases...

Bacteria Vs Germs

This book talks about Staph, Strep, Clostridium, and Other Bacteria

Cinder Cone, Kapoho Eruption, HawaiiBacteria (Class of Their Own)
Amazon $9.95

Bacteria acquires nutrition through their environment; they reproduce at very high rates and can live inside or outside the human body...Due to these traits, bacteria can cause a variety of illness and disease which are mostly infections...The most common illnesses that they cause are sore throats, skin infections and diarrhea...

Germs on the other hand also include viruses, fungi and protozoa...They cause far more diseases than bacteria can do alone. Viruses cannot live in an outside environment; they need a host to survive and reproduce...Fungi and protozoa cannot make their own food; this is why they get theirs from other organisms...

Do You Use Hand Sanitizer's To Wash Your Hands With?

Yes, I never go anywhere without my hand sanitizer

BeyondRoses says:

I take hand sanitizers with me everywhere I go. I try to avoid touching door knobs, and everything that is touched by the public ... not an easy thing to do sometimes. I sure would not touch a shopping cart bar. Our grocer now has sanitizers at the door. Use one to clean shopping cart bar, and one for hands.

No, I'm okay with just soap and water

wordstock says:

I just think the hand sanitizer covers the germs so I head for the sink.

Margaret_Schaut says:

No, its almost all very high priced alcohol. It really dries out the skin for one thing.

Frischy says:

I use regular soap and water, but I wash my hands often. I also carry hand sanitizer in the car. We also use it a lot at school.

tandemonimom says:

I never use hand sanitizer. Far too many nasty chemicals, and the anti-bacterial stuff just kills off weak bacteria and leaves an open field for stronger ones.

Upon-Request says:

Sometimes I will - especially during cold and flu season, but mostly it's good ol' soap and water and a lot of Vitamin D.

You Can't See The Germs

But you know their on your hands

Cinder Cone, Kapoho Eruption, HawaiiWorld's Worst Germs
Amazon $7.99

Germs and bacteria that are 'bad' are definitely threats you cannot avoid...You cannot see them even if they are everywhere and you always make contact with them...This is why you always need to practice proper hygiene...

This includes the frequent use of hand sanitizers, as your hands are the most probable carrier of germs...Cleaning with the use of disinfecting products is also effective...

I know all these nasties hang around mobile phones, cordless phones, door knobs etc.I wipe these down at home with alcohol wipes.

Soap is one of the best things for cleaning away germs, but for shopping carts, door knobs and so forth, some portable cleaning agent is fantastic.
  • Frischy Jan 4, 2012 @ 11:56 am | delete
I am a great believer in hand washing. Also, using Lysol spray seems to help. I worked in a battered women's shelter where the staff was always getting sick from so many kids in and out. We got a new house manager who went around spraying Lysol several times a day, and suddenly staff was a lot healthier and the number of sick days decreased quite signficantly. Clean door knobs, telephones, stair rails...anyplace a lot of people are touching. It makes a difference!

GROSS on the cell phones! I wonder if smart phones, with their smooth surfaces, resist bacteria more than the ones with buttons and all sorts of grooves for bacteria to hide?
