Musical Brother Team - George and Ira Gershwin

Ira and George Gershwin became the first long-term team to create the scores for many successful Broadway and movie musicals. Although other composers and lyricists teamed up before the Gershwin brothers, none of them stayed together for an extended time or for a sustained list of hit shows. The Gershwin brothers set the stage for later teams, such as Rodgers and Hammerstein and Kanter and Ebb.

Ira and George Gershwin had parents who had immigrated to the US from Russia in the 1800s. The family name went from the original Gershowitz to Gershvin and eventually to Gershwin when George became a professional musician and made the final name change.

George and Ira's parents encouraged their children's musical talents early in life, but it was George who responded to their parents' efforts. While George took piano lessons and studied music, Ira preferred writing and pursuing other interests. Eventually, however, Ira turned his writing talents to song lyrics and when he teamed up with his brother, he helped to create a long list of memorable songs.

Although George and Ira Gershwin wrote many wonderful songs, their masterpiece was the score for the modern opera, "Porgy and Bess." It opened on Broadway in 1935 and ran for 124 performances. The music was composed by George Gershwin and the the lyrics were by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. The opera was based on DuBose's novel and play, "Porgy."

The story is about African-Americans living in the slums of South Carolina in the 1920s. Porgy, a disabled man, falls in love with Bess and tries to save her from her cruel and violent lover, Crown. There is also a subplot involving the local drug dealer, Sportin' Life.

Originally, "Porgy and Bess" was not viewed as an opera, but in 1976, it was performed in its entirety by the Houston Grand Opera Company and it was finally accepted as a great masterpiece of modern opera. The best-known song from "Porgy and Bess" is the beautiful "Summertime." Other memorable songs include "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "I Got Plenty o' Nothin'." [read more...]
