Getting a Scholarship

Scholarships are a great way to pay for college because it's free money. Unlike loans, you don't have to pay a scholarship back.

Because of this, competition can be fierce, making it difficult to get some of the more popular scholarships.

But with a bit of effort, you can get the scholarship that you want to help you pay for college.

Types of Scholarships

The key to getting a scholarship is knowing your type...

There are many different types of scholarships. The best way to get a scholarship is to know the types of scholarships that will best match you. It's obviously no use applying for an athletic scholarship if you can't catch a baseball or kick a soccer ball.

Matching yourself to the right scholarship will give you a leg up on the competition.

Here are some of the types of scholarships available:

  • Sports. These are some of the most well known. If you are a talented athlete, you are often able to get a sports scholarship through your school. The school wants you to play on their team, so they will give you money to be able to do that.
  • Minority. If you belong to a special minority group, then there are many scholarships that can help you to pay for school.
  • Merit. These are scholarships that are based on your grades and other thing that you may have done to help the community.
  • Local. Many local organizations offer scholarships to students within their communities. Check these out especially because there's bound to be less competition.
  • School-based. Once you know what school you will be going to, check to see if they have any scholarships available. Often they have scholarships available to their students only.

Now that you've picked the type of scholarship that you qualify for, all you need to do is find the scholarships that are out there....
