Here Is What I Did To Get More Fans On Facebook

Recently I reached a milestone number of fans on a relatively new Facebook fan page and was asked to share my secrets to get more fans on Facebook. So, I have pulled together all of my tricks and present them here. Truth be told, I really haven't discovered anything new, just utilized lots of information that is already out there. I want legitimate fans, people who choose my page because they want to hear what I have to say, and they want to share something while they are there. So, I don't ever pay to get more fans on Facebook. Like most internet success stories, mine is based on persistence, follow up and passion.

And this comes from passion and consistency

I was a bit apprehensive about Facebook until I was encouraged by Rocketmom leader Bonnie. I have adapted much of these suggestions to get started from Bonnie, or from trial and error.

Write about what you know and what you are passionate about, it comes through in your posts and it's much more fun!
Try to post daily, but not more than twice per day
Ask engaging questions which will elicit comments
Check back a few times during the day, to respond to comments
Promote your page (see suggestions below)

Know Your Target Audience and What They Like

Knowing Who Your Audience Is Will Help to Get More Fans on Facebook

I use the comments as a gauge of my audience, as each is different.

On my humor page I have noticed that the fans most often comment:

On Jokes - or self contained posts
On videos less than 1 minute in length, and only if I state the video length in my text
On pictures / comics only IF I include the text portion of the photo in my post
On "add more one-liners" to a topic

In contrast, on the homeschool page fans most often comment:

On direct questions related to how individuals homeschool
On interesting links related to homeschooling

And on my Design page fans most often comment:

On Stunning scenery
On Cheeky designs

I forgot my audience - just for a moment - and I lost fans

Remeber to Keep Your Posts Appropriate to Your Audience If You Want To Get More Fans on Facebook

Here is an exaple of what NOT to do

Always remember your target audience, especially if you also run a comedy site. Yes, I know my comedy site can be a bit off color, as is my sense of humor. My comedy fans know that, and share my twisted sense of humor. Otherwise they probably wouldn't be my fans. However, some of the jokes just don't belong on the homeschool page, and fans are very unforgiving.

So, if you make a mistake and post something which your fans don't like, and they start dropping off, here's what I suggest:

Delete the post as soon as you see your fan base drop (this will also delete any comments made on the post, which in my case weren't very nice anyway and I was glad to see them go).
Add an appropriate post so your fans who haven't seen the offensive post will still see a daily post when they check in.
Continue to post as if the "mistake" never happened. Chances are those who were offended are already gone, and the others most likely either didn't care or more likely they never saw it.

Lots of Subtle Ways to Promote Your Facebook Page

Here is what I do

On Squidoo Lenses (a fancy name Squidoo uses for it's pages):

I add a home made button to the bio section of appropriate pages:
I either use the Facebook Fan Box (See Next Section) or I add a graphic in a text module. Here is a sample:

On e-mail:

I add it my signature line for all appropriate contacts

Need a daily laugh, become a Facebook fan of: Things Which Make Me Laugh

I invite my friends to become a fan (I only ask actual friends)

On Facebook

I use the "suggest to friends" link from the fan page to invite all new friends.
I send a second invite about a month later (if they didn't become a fan initially).
I also give credit to the person who sent in a link on the fan page
If I post a link to another webpage, and that page has a comment box, I always add some version of the following (a shorter version if it is on something I wrote - and Yes I do comment it on my own pages if I am featuring them, its all about backlinks and other's seeing it):Featured today on facebook. See it at: Things Which Make Me Laugh. If you're on facebook, please become a fan (click on "like"). And invite your friends too!

Do You Have a Facebook Fan Page?

Please become a fan of one of my pages and then add a link to yours here.

To add a link to your fan page, simply open your page in another window and then copy the URL at the top of your fan page, return to this page click "add to this list" and then paste the URL. Which looks something like:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Things-Which-Make-Me-Laugh/334197934339

Click on "done adding" a box will appear which says Link Title which now contains your URL. Change this to read your page title and add a short description (only the first line will show, so keep it short)
