Having a Bad Day? Get Motivated!

How do you get motivated even on the worst days? We all have days like that.

For those of us who work alone, staying motivated is the biggest challenge we face. When you work for yourself often you do work without seeing results for an extended period of time. And the immediate can get you down.

This article is full of ideas and resources on how to get motivated when life is at its toughest. If you are dissappointed, you can keep going, with great results. Just by going forward. But you do need the ability to get motivated on the worst days, because no one can predict when those days will be.

Here are some of the ways I keep going. Hope you can pick up some ideas from this article.

Everyone Has Their Own Ways of Staying Motivated

As a business owner, I have to be on all the time

I struggle every day to get motivated. I am a small business owner, and that means that I am always on stage for my customers, vendors, and artists that I deal with. Getting motivated each day is very important to me, and I make it a priority in my life.

Does that mean that I do not have a bad day? No, It doesn't. I have bad days all the time, due to circumstances, how I feel that day, something that happened at home, or business issues. But in order to run my business, and to succeed, I need to focus on the long term, not what is happening on that particular day.

I have learned for the most part to look past the moment towards the future. I work very hard on greeting every customer, vendor, and merchant with a smile and a positive attittude, and I respect those people who treat me the same way.

Life can be tough, and so can business. This is a list of my methods for getting and staying motivated.

Is That a REAL Smile?

Fake it until you make it

I believe in the idea of fake it until you make it. And I have learned through experience that it works.

All of us have ups and downs, good days and bad days, and a lot of in between days. As we age, our bodies complain more and more about just getting out of bed, let alone getting to our job in a positive, upbeat manner.

For what I do, I need to have a positive friendly tone whenever I see someone I know whether I like them or not. I am always selling myself even when I am not at work. Many days I just don't feel like doing that, especially in the morning because I am NOT a morning person.

But I fake the attitude, and sometime during the morning I find that I really feel that way. It does work. And the more I do it, the easier it is to get back into the mode.

Motivational Quotes

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars. ~Les Brown

Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished by people not smart enough to know they were impossible. ~Doug Larson

Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire. ~Arnold H. Glasow

God gives us dreams a size too big so that we can grow in them. ~Author Unknown

How am I going to live today in order to create the tomorrow I'm committed to? ~Anthony Robbins

It took me a long time not to judge myself through someone else's eyes. ~Sally Field

A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her. ~David Brinkley

If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. ~Vincent Van Gogh

Don't live down to expectations. Go out there and do something remarkable. ~Wendy Wasserstein

BELIEVE--Really Believe in Yourself

It is critical that you totally believe in what you are doing and your goals, even if you don't know how you are going to get there.

Your belief is often what carries you through until you reach the next step, or the next level.

Many times what happens is that you keep doing the actions, the activities that you believe will get you to your goals, and see no results.

Then when you aren't looking, all of the sudden several opportunities come your way. But it was all the prep work you did that got you there. The results were just delayed.

So whatever it takes to keep believing, do it. For some people, it is meditation. For others, a good workout. And for some, self talk or a certain song. It really doesn't matter how you maintain belief, just do whatever it takes because your belief will lead you to everything else.

Remind Yourself of Your Goals

And break down your goals in smaller pieces

Each time I get bogged down in the day to day--paying bills, staffing, being tired, overbusy schedule, a long list of things to do, I stop and think about where I have come from, what I have accomplished, and what the next steps are.

Just doing that alone keeps me motivated.

Where have I come from?

A year ago, I was selling my jewelry professionally, but with no real strategy in mind. I just made stuff and sold it without a pattern or plan.

What have I accomplished in the last few months?

I have created a wholesale plan to sell my work on a wide scale across the country. I have hired a salesperson locally. I have designed the process, and the look of my work for the wholesale business. I have created a strategy to reach my goals, and I have begun to implement it.

And where will I be at the end of the year?

I believe strongly that I will have a minimum of 30 wholesale accounts as well as strong sales in my own store and online.

That is a lot to be happy about!

Learn How Business Leaders are Motivated

Use their techniques

Behind every great success story is a great motivation to succeed.

It drives us, inspires us, and compels us to reach for the most impossible of dreams. It is that indefinable ingredient we call motivation--and it is the key factor that separates ordinary people from the truly great leaders of our world. Motivation, however, can't be forced or faked. It is the responsibility of every great leader to create conditions that will empower individuals and teams to get things done in ways that they find enriching and fulfilling. Once motivated, they become transformed; they want to achieve, they want to do well. Why? Because their work matters--to their boss, to their teams, and to themselves.

This remarkable new book by John Bondoni explores the many ways that motivation has worked for others--and how it can work for you. Through the incredible life stories of highly successful men and women, Great Motivation Secrets of Great Leaders draws its action-ready principles from real-world examples. These leaders are an eclectic mix from different walks of life and different moments in time. There is a unifying theme; each knew, or knows, how to create conditions for people to motivate themselves. Some like Ernest Shackleton and Magic Johnson are outgoing men of action; others like Crazy Horse are soft-spoken role models. Thich Nhat Hanh, Frances Hesselbein and David Hackworth are eloquent communicators and outstanding manager-leaders. Pat Summitt and Colleen Barrett are coaches, one of college basketball, the other of Southwest Airlines. Mary Kay Ash and Sam Walton are successful entrepreneurs, as are Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig. Each possesses a unique style that draws people in. People want to participate in whatever the leader is doing, whether it's playing a sport, running a business, or exploring uncharted territory. And each of these leaders has an inspirational story to tell--a story with important lessons for us all.

This unique combination of leadership principles and real-life stories can easily be applied to your own career and your own dreams, linking personal actions to organizational results. Each chapter is filled with practical and proven techniques that can bring people together, raise enthusiasm for any endeavor, and focus individual energies on mutual goals. As an added bonus, the book's key messages and leadership lessons are highlighted in a handy section in the back for easy reference and special motivation.

Intrinsic Motivation at Work: Building Energy and Commitment

Review
"A major step forward in our understanding of intrinsic motivation. This book is readable, logical, and especially relevant to those concerned with the attraction, retention, and motivation of knowledge workers and the effective management of Generation X employees." - Barry D. Leskin, Chief Learning Officer, Chevron Corporation "An eminently useful and important book that every manager should have on his must-read self." - Warren Bennis, Distinguished Professor of Business, USC and author of Organizing Genius "Ken Thomas raises a critical issue at a crucial time. How can the individual be proactive about making his or her own work more energizing and rewarding, and, simultaneously, what can the manager do to support or ignite this energy? The answers to both questions lie in the pages of this book." - Beverly Kaye, author of Up Is Not The Only Way and coauthor of Love 'Em or Lose 'Em: Getting Good People to Stay "Intrinsic Motivation at Work is a must-read for everyone who cares about organizational success and quality of life at work in the future. It's a virtual handbook for the self-managing and their leaders." - David W. Jamieson, Adjunct Professor of Management, Pepperdine University, President, Jamieson Consulting Group, and coauthor of Managing Workforce 2000
