Writing for websites

Putting your name to your words, and pulling in the cash

There are plenty of websites that will reward you for writing articles.

Helium is free and while you don't get paid for every article you submit, you will earn a share of the advertising revenues every time someone views one of your articles. This is a long term venture - write plenty of articles and make sure you stick with popular subjects to attract more readers. There is also a Marketplace which invites you to submit articles in the normal way, but you also have the chance of receiving a much larger payment if yours is chosen for publication by one of the listed magazines looking for content.

Associated Content pays for unique and worthwhile contributions to its website in two ways. Residents of the US may receive an upfront payment for an accepted contribution, and additionally everyone who joins and has work published may earn performance payments depending on how many times each article is viewed. If you can drive a lot of traffic to your articles this could be a lot of money.

Constant Content accepts authors worldwide and you can set your own prices for the articles you want to sell. Once they have been accepted onto the site anyone can buy them for the amounts you specify. You can also invite people to make an offer, which you can then accept or decline. You can also write blog entries and reviews if you wish. If you become known for writing on a specific subject you will find you can usually charge more for each piece.

Squidoo is a wonderful way to monetize your writing, by creating and writing lenses (pages). There are lots of modules which allow you to recommend relevant products to people who are interested in your chosen subject, and you can also link to external websites which you have an affiliate link for. Each lens earns a royalty every month, which varies according to how well each lens has performed. This means you have two chances of making some money with the site.

Writing for other people

If you know how to write good articles then you could make a good living as a ghostwriter.

People need content to publish on their websites and in article directories, and some people want someone else to write their blog for them too.

You can easily find this kind of work in several locations online:

1. Online bidding sites

Some are free to join, such as Get A Freelancer, while others give you the option of a limited free membership or a more comprehensive paid membership, such as Guru.

Once you join you can browse the jobs listed and bid on any you would like to win. On completion of a successful project you will usually have a small percentage of your fee deducted by the site before the rest is deposited into your account. You can then withdraw the money, usually via PayPal or to your bank account.

Guru.com - selling your skills and bidding on projects

2. Classified ad sites

Websites such as Craigslist offer numerous writing jobs every day of the week, along with other sites which are dedicated to offering writing related work, such as Online Writing Jobs.

Keep a note of any jobs that you apply for, and make sure you read the advert thoroughly and submit the exact information that is required. A lot of writers compete for the same jobs, so you will need to stand out.

Craigslist.org - The world's most popular classified ad site

3. Join a ghostwriting team

If you don't want the hassle of going out and finding work yourself, do your research and see if you can join a ghostwriting team instead of going it alone.

Searching for 'ghostwriting positions' or 'ghostwriting team' on Google or similar search engines will alert you to lots of outfits that rely on a team of writers to do the work that they pull in - usually from bidding sites such as Elance and Guru.

Don't worry if they don't advertise for writers - it's worth sending a simple email listing your experience and asking if they are looking for new people to join their team. Rates can differ according to the work offered but there is usually plenty of it.
