How to Have the Life of Your Dreams
The Science of Getting Rich is a once-obscure book that is now taking the world by storm. Written in 1910 by Wallace D. Wattles, an early proponent of the law of attraction, it is just as applicable today as when Mr. Wattles first put the words on paper. Perhaps it is even more relevant in today's world, when so many people are struggling just to make ends meet and wondering if they'll ever have the life they dream of.
This is not a get-rich-quick scheme, although some people have had amazing results. It takes some effort, but if you follow the rules set forth in the book, Wattles asserts you cannot fail. It is also not just positive thinking. That is an important part, as far as it embraces belief and faith, but there is much more to it.

Preface to the Book
By Wallace D. Wattles
This book is pragmatical, not philosophical -- a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money, who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached.
It is expected that the reader will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or an Edison, and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich, for the science herein applied is an exact science and failure is impossible.
In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down herein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy. It has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment: It works.

Wally and The Law of Attraction
Thinking in the "Certain Way"
Wally has his own language and method of explaining the law of attraction, described here:
Know what you want. Wattles instructs you to do the same, creating a clear mental image of every specific detail of your desire.
Ask the universe for it. Wattles says to impress your clear mental image upon the "formless substance" by keeping that image constantly in mind. Hold that image with the determination that you will receive it. Don't give any part of your mind to negativity or dwell on the opposite of your desire.
Feel, know, and behave as if the object of your desire is on its way to you. Wattles instructs you to hold the attitude of faith and gratitude. Act as if you already own the thing you desire, believe it is already yours and you have only to take possession of it, and see yourself using it in your mental image. Be as grateful for it now as you will be when you actually receive it. Gratitude is your connection to the formless intelligence, which wants you to have all you can use for greater life.
Be open to receive your desire, letting go of your attachment to the outcome. Here Wattles says you must be ready to receive that which you asked for, and to do this, you must take action.
"A person's way of doing things is the direct result of the way he thinks about things."
Basic Principles
The right to be rich. You have a right to live your life fully in terms of mental, spiritual, and physical development. In order to enjoy all the life you are capable of living, you must be able to make use of things, and you need money to get those things. Therefore, you have a right to be rich. There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made. All things were created from an original substance, and are just different forms of the same element. Wattles also refers to this substance as thinking stuff, formless intelligence, formless substance, the universe, and God. This original substance is intelligent, and the things it thinks about are created in form. Everything you see existed first in thought. You can't make something until you have had the thought of it.
A person is also a thinking entity, and can create something by impressing a thought upon the thinking substance. Since people don't have the abilities of God, a thought doesn't manifest directly from formless substance. Rather, the thing will be created through existing channels; the thought merely puts the forces in motion.
Increasing life. The inherent urge in nature is for growth and increasing life. The formless intelligence, as part of nature, desires more life, and it grows through you as you acquire all you need to live fully. Therefore, the universe wants you to be rich and will do all it can to give you what you want.
The formless substance is generous. It is a creative entity, and never competitive. You must bring yourself into harmony with the formless by pursuing your objectives in a way that creates more life for all; do not engage in competition to drive others down. As you acquire wealth, you must do it with the thought of increasing life.
Abundance. There is no shortage of riches. There is enough formless substance to create everything that everyone desires. That is why there is no need for competitive action, no need to rush. There is more than enough for everyone.

"Every act can be made strong and efficient by holding your vision while you are doing it and putting the whole power of your FAITH and PURPOSE into it."
Beyond the Law of Attraction
Acting in the "Certain Way"
Therefore, you can't just do the mental work and expect riches to fall into your lap. You must act -- and you must act in a "certain way." It is your actions that prepare you to receive what you have attracted.
It may outwardly appear that you are doing the same thing as always. You may still be doing the same job or running the same business as before, but to act in the certain way, you must ensure that you are doing it with a creative, not competitive, attitude. Competitiveness has a negative energy, and will cause negative consequences. Be in harmony with the intelligent substance, which is always creative.
In your work, you must "more than fill your present place." Do not procrastinate or waste time. Efficiently do all that can be done every day. When presented with an opportunity to be more than you are, take it, and continue to act in the certain way in your new position.
It is very important to give everyone a use value greater than the cash value you take from them; this results in more life for all. Communicate the impression of increase to everyone you encounter. It's not something you have to talk about; it will emanate from your very being as you hold your attitude of faith and gratitude, and as you project positive thought energies to the formless substance. People will subconsciously perceive your energies, and will be drawn to do more business with you. You have taken action and are ready to receive the riches that are now on your doorstep.
If you have a clear idea of what you want, know that you can attract what you want, and are determined to learn and follow the scientific principles set forth by Wattles in his book, The Science of Getting Rich, you will attain the abundant life you desire.

- An interesting thing I realized the other day, I believe related to this: I'd put my intention out to the universe years ago before I'd even heard of this stuff. I wrote about what happened at http://www.squidoo.com/not-just-the-money

- I believe in the wisdom of "The Law of Attraction". Like you said, Mystic, it's sometimes hard to stay positive when Life overwhelms you, but it DOES work, even in small ways. Very interesting lens and a good reminder. I'll be checking out the ebook.
