Short Stories vs. Long Novels

I love novels. I've got a few favorites I've read so often the covers have been taped up.

But I love short stories even more. Sometimes I'm so busy, I may only have a little time to read. I may not even be able to get through one chapter.... and I hate to stop reading in the middle of a chapter.

Short stories give me an entertaining escape for just a little while. I get to thoroughly enjoy a short break, start to finish, with a good tale that will make me laugh, or cry, or really think.

These are my favorite novels

... of ALL time. Just fantastic work, these.

What makes an exceptional novel?

I got a really high score on my ACT test when I applied for college, and ended up testing out of almost everything in the English department. Looking back, I think I missed out on a lot. The point of that is that I've had no training in what is considered "good" literature. I don't care about themes, I don't look for hidden meaning. I just know if I like what I read, or not.

So here are the things that a novel must have to make my list. As you see, it's a very short list. I love to read, and I've read thousands of novels. I've loved and enjoyed many, but... only four make my list. What set them apart?

The characters in these books are so real to me. I'm not reading about them, I become one of them. I am so drawn into their world that I'm not just watching from the outside, but it's as if I'm sitting at the table with them, or out walking among the country roads or city streets, right there with them.

I laugh so long and hard that I cry. I cry hard enough to have to stop reading and get some tissues. I feel sorrow, pain, joy, fear, shock, and awe. The turns of phrase are stunning, the use of words ... I can read a passage over and over and wonder how the author ever came up with putting those particular words side by side to evoke such emotion.

Best of all.... the first time I read the novel, I cannot for the life of me see where it's going. A literal page-turner, I HAVE to keep turning the pages and reading, because I HAVE to know what happens next and I can't imagine ahead to the ending.

I know a woman who picks up a new book, and goes straight to the last page. She reads the ending first. WHAT IN THE WORLD.... WHY?????

I simply cannot understand this. To me, one of the greatest joys is NOT knowing how it will end. I've read novels where, from within just the first few pages, I can tell how it's going to turn out. Maybe not how it gets there, and maybe it's still an enjoyable read, but those books will never make my list. I love to be surprised, and for me, each of these novels had a surprise ending.

And these are my favorite collections of short stories

Used Price: $0.01

Fish Tree Tales: Stories from Japan

What makes an exceptional short story?

To me, an exceptional short story is like an exceptional novel. It can draw emotions out of me, and I don't know where it's going. The stories in Thomas Steinbeck's collection (yes, son of John) meet these criteria. I hope my own short stories do that for you, too.

A few other short stories

Some years ago I took a writing course and began writing stories. All short stories. Seemed easier to start with short stories. Here are some of those stories.
In Memory of Love
"This was my grandfather's house," said the Real Estate agent. I'd been away for many years, living and working in Europe and Asia. Twenty years ago, I tried to retire in Florida, but I hate the constant summer. I am old and I want what I want. I want seasons, winters. I'm old, but I'm strong. I can take care of myself! I've come home to Kansas. "He'd had his own construction company and built houses," the agent continued. "This is the last one he built before he died."

"Oh?" I asked, distracted by the detailed carving on the front porch posts. "I lived here years ago. Who was your grandfather?"

"Michael DeLano," she answered. "Did you know him?"

At the sound of his name, I was once again....
Abundance of Life
They say God loves us through each other. I don't know about that. It's not something I've felt I could rely on. Today the Kansas wind dries the sweat off my face before it's formed. "By the sweat of your brow," Bob, my father-in-law reminds me. We certainly have sweated these last years, working the farm, trying to make it yield. Dan's parents couldn't do it by themselves, and I can't imagine leaving them. And yet, the tie that's bound me has become a burden I'd rather loosen and set down.
The Secret
(For the record, I wrote this story long before I'd heard of "The Secret" meaning attraction theory or anything else.)

Old Man Harris fell heavily when the tall boy pushed him down. Cans of soup from the small bag he'd been carrying bounced and rolled away. A loaf of bread became a soccer ball for one pair of boys. The others laughed and gathered around the old man, closing in on him. They elbowed each other, and one or two of them poked at him with their feet. Just as they began to howl, Tom DuPaul stepped in.

Handmade Baby Blankets
I've been knitting for years. YEARS! Decades, if I stop and think about it. The proverbial pot-holder, then scarf, then I jumped right into sweaters. They weren't all wearable or usable in the beginning. In fact... they were downright awful. But now I feel a sense of competence. I've made many....
