Interview with Laura Whitelaw

Author of Resume Strategies Revealed

Laura, why did you write this book?

I wrote this e-book in order to reach more people and provide them with the tools to land their next job. I have seen a lot of resumes in my time and the vast majority of people unfortunately do not have the ability to write a proper "interview landing" resume. So, that's where I come in as a professional resume writer. However, many people shy away from my fees (which range from $150 - $350)-- I created an ebook in order to help those people that need my help but may not be able to afford my fees.

How long have you been creating resumes?

If you count the 4 years I spent working as an employment agent then I would say that it's 7 years professionally. However, before I began writing resumes and charging fees, I had helped many friends and family members with their resumes.

Does a good resume really make a difference?

Absolutely - I get very positive feedback from my clients who have commented that the number of interviews and quality of interviews went up after having their resume professionally prepared by me. The same results are true for people who follow my advice and create a resume based on how professional resume writers create resumes. Also, many people have commented on how much more confident they felt about landing their dream job once they had a professional resume prepared and confidence goes a long way in the whole job search process.

Do potential employers really read resumes that carefully?

Absolutely - most times you won't even get an interview without a resume. It's also frequently used as a basis for the interview process.

what's the best advice you would offer to someone who is looking for a job?

You should start with a professionally written and targeted resume prepared by a resume writer or with the help of a step-by-step guide. Then target your search to your area of specialization and send out resumes to companies that meet your criteria and whose criteria you meet as well. Once you start landing interviews, continue sending your resume out to new opportunities that you come across-- otherwise you may begin to loose momentum. Don't limit yourself to just one job search method - use as many methods as possible such as online job sites, off-line and online networking, employment agencies, etc.

Write a Great Resume!

The most important step for job-seekers

Your resume is your ticket to competition in the job market. Make sure your ticket is the best one in the bunch. Employers receive hundreds of resumes. I know. I have worked in offices for over 25 years. I can assure you that many resumes go directly into a "do not contact" folder. The best and only the best are presented to the director of the personnel department. Don't sell yourself short. Learn all there is to know about resume writing.

PS One of my former employers would immediately reject any resume with a spelling error -- no matter the qualifications. Be careful. Proofread. Have your friends and family proofread. You only get one chance to make a first impression.
