Credit score, Credit Reports, Free Credit Reports. What are they?

Credit is defined in many different ways, but for consumers credit can be defined as.

"reputation of solvency and probity, entitling a person to be trusted in buying or borrowing"

If you are an American, you probably know how important credit is and how it affects your daily life.

There are people, however, who think that either they don't have a credit score or their credit scores don't really matter. The truth is, it matters a lot. Nowadays, almost all companies who you'd want to deal with will check your credit score. They kinda think that the score is synonymous to your credibility, which is, in a way, true.

And to those who think that they don't have a credit score, well, the moment you opened up that bank account, got a phone plan, and got your own apartment, you started building your credit. If you weren't aware of that, read on and you'll be a lot wiser in a few minutes.

To those who are struggling credit wise, read on as well.

Credit Score - How Important Is It?

I'd say VERY IMPORTANT! Having a low credit score will hurt your chances at:

  • some jobs.

  • acquiring loans.

  • good interest rates.

  • and even your chances of getting that apartment you've always dreamed of.

Credit scores are called many things, including credit rating, credit risk rating, credit score rating, FICO score, or a FICO rating. All these refers to the 3 digits that gives lenders an idea of how likely you are to repay your bills.

Credit scores are usually between 300 and 850. The higher your credit score is, the better. Generally, scores in the low 600s are considered a bad credit score and will give you trouble in finding credit while scores of 720 and above will give you the best interest rates in town.

Did You Know?

A person's credit report is one of the most important tools consumers can use to maintain their financial security and credit rating, but for so long many did not know how to obtain one, or what to do with the information it provided.

  • Pay your bills on time - A very simple way to keep your credit scores high up. There's no better way to show lenders that you are serious when it comes to your debts than a flawless payment history.

Plus, you save yourself from late fees and other charges brought about by late payments

  • Avoid excessive credit - Simple, the more debts you have, the greater your monthly debt payments are and so as your chances of not having to repay them in the future. Having too much debt is a big turn off to lenders and gets a big chunk out of your credit score.

  • Pay down your debts - Who do you think will have a better credit score? Both are prompt payers. John, who has a credit card limit of $1000 and carries a regular balance of $850 or Paul who has the same credit limit and a regular balance of $300? I bet you got it right.

In general, try to maintain your balance to a maximum of 50% of your credit card limit. Better if you can make it even lower.

  • Have a range of credit types - Having 2 credit cards at most plus other credit types such as mortgage and a car loan, and managing them well will make you smell like fresh air to lenders and will do wonders to your credit score.
