New Year's Resolution - Getting in Shape at Home

By Nishan Wilde

With the coming of each new year, we always make promises. Promises to live life differently, try new things, and be an all around better person. One of the most popular New Year's resolutions is getting into shape. It is true that often times we let ourselves go a little bit as our lives do not seem to allow regular exercise. And each year people promise themselves that this is the year when they will go to the gym regularly and get back into shape.

However, the harsh reality is that our lives can sometimes be too hectic for the gym. Allotting enough time to get ready, drive to the gym, work out and come home is a pretty big commitment to do every day. In my opinion, that is the main reason why people fail to accomplish their get-back-into-shape resolution.

Well, there is an alternative solution to this problem - home gyms. When you talk to people who are in the habit of constantly working out, a lot of the time they are just like you and me with very limited time to devote to going to the gym. So, they bring the gym to them. From dumbbells and treadmills to punching bags and wavemasters, stocking your basement or garage with workout equipment is the answer to your problem.

Getting Back in Shape:
32 Workout Programs for Lifelong Fitness

One of the things you can invest on is a home exercise equipment. Among the different home exercise equipment, treadmills are usually the main pick by many. Even if you have limited space, you can still use a collapsible treadmill. You take it out whenever you need to use it and then store it in your closet after. With a treadmill, getting fit has never been easier.

Walking on a treadmill is a simple aerobic workout that will help you get in shape. You will be able to burn calories and fat when you regularly walk on a treadmill. Not only that, a treadmill can also help you shed off those unwanted pounds. Best of all, a regular treadmill routine will help improve your metabolism and build up your energy.

While a treadmill is also good for jogging and running, you can start out by walking, especially if you are overweight or have joint problems. Start by walking at least half an hour every day on the treadmill until you can gradually increase your pace. After you have gotten used to walking on the treadmill, you can try power walking or brisk walking. There are treadmill workouts you can try that can help you get the most out of your treadmill. These workouts are on DVD and you can find them online or at selected stores.

Getting in Shape

Physical fitness comprises two related concepts: general fitness (a state of health and well-being) and specific fitness (a task-oriented definition based on the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupations).

In previous years, fitness was commonly defined as the capacity to carry out the day's activities without undue fatigue. However, as automation increased leisure time, changes in lifestyles following the industrial revolution rendered this definition insufficient. These days, physical fitness is considered a measure of the body's ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic diseases, and to meet emergency situations.
